The World’s last flying Vulcan bomber is to be grounded forever after engineering backers pulled their support due to safety fears.
The Cold War icon – which is one of the greatest achievements of British aerospace engineering – will make its final flight this autumn.
Last night ordinary aviation enthusiasts, who fought for years and raised millions of pounds to keep the Vulcan airborne, were ‘devastated’ by the decision, after trustees admitted ‘there’s nothing else we can do’.

Ive got tickets for this years RIAT and hopefully im going to Shoreham aswell, so i'll get to say my farewells, this has been on the cards for a few years and it had to happen some day, they've done well keeping her flying this long

They sure did! If you can get one, the Haynes owners' workshop manual is a good read about XH558 and the restoration process. Plenty of good photos as well.

One Brilliant book , 'The Avro Vulcan Britains Cold War Warrior' published 2007 by Phillip Birtles is another goodie.

'V-Bombers' by Barry Jones and 'The Vulcan story' by Peter March (Bought for me by my sister (!) when she visited the Hendon museum, she's an even bigger aviation nut than I am!) are also on my shelf, and the Vulcan is installed in both Fs9 and FsX. Love that aircraft.

Jeez , that is one nice sister you have Ferry , like you have both FS9 'Vulcan to the Sky' package and FSX, Its a shame its to be grounded , pity they could not find a billionaire to pick up the tab, I have many of the Haynes owners' workshop manuals, on your recommendation I should get the Vulcan , frankly I'm surprised I don't have it but must also source those other two books you mentioned.

The Vulcan Story is a small book, well suited for a museum gift shop I guess, but not a real in-depth book about the vulcan. Still, at 9 GBP it makes a nice gift:

What a shame... I remember getting a wall calendar in the 2004 spring issue of Flypast, and there was a blurb about XH558 and how one could donate towards her restoration. The tremendous efforts of those who tirelessly and selflessly worked to get her majesty back to flying status. And the outpouring of donations... Only to have this gallant Vulcan relegated as a static display. The sky is really where she belongs. At least she had a brief taste of freedom, as well as the crew who flew her. And many had the chance to see her fly again.

XH558 lives on in the virtual world of flight, I have the Vulcan for both sims and she gets a lot of air time.
