Exotic animals escape; dozens shot to death I missed this!!

Hum....two exotic animal preserves, both owners found dead (the first being found dead in bed, with a mask over his head and his arms and legs bound), cages left open so the animals could escape. Sounds to me like some of those wacky animal-rights nut cases going a little too militant.

So, where were the brainiacs with the dart guns to put the animals to sleep instead of killing them??
 
They've called in the Columbus Zoo with traq guns and bait. State's DNR are just trained primary in Domestic wildlife, so the nearest zoo would have been called in case point Columbus. Till then it's protection order Shoot to kill procedure and attempting trapping.
 
Thanks Tim. I needed to know that. Here in Bend, we had a family of four mountain lions living in the middle of town ( a hundred thousand residents ) a couple years back. They've since moved on, but , no one was ever hurt, because we know humans arent on a mountain lions menu unless you live near LA.. We live with the wild up here, not in spite of it, where people mostly hunt for food. I hope they catch the people that are responsible, and i am not allowed by society to describe what i wish was done to them, but i also hope no more animals will be killed for no other reason than they are what they are, and where humans dont want them.

Well..at least i´m reassured that somewhere in the planet of the apes,someone is shooting humans for escaping from their cages...
Overreaction at it´s worst, animals didn´t do it, i´m not an activist, and i dont like tree huggers, BUT this is WRONG in so many ways..
Anyway..back to my meds

That would be my guess as well.
 
A real shame. Apparently, the proprietor of this wild animal preserve opened the various cages first and then took his life. He probably knew that these animals would be shot,...or most of them.
 
Resisting temptation for more hobbit jokes, I'm glad you missed this Owen. It seems the owner was just out of prison and the release was deliberate. We also hear almost all the released animals have been caught or shot now - according to tonight's BBC news that is.
 
I just read online that only two animals were now unaccounted for, a wolf and a monkey. However the monkey could be carrying a human transferable disease and will be shot on sight.

The list of killed animals is rather tragic as many were endangered species.

Of the 48 animals that were shot and killed, there was one wolf, six black bears, nine male lions, eight lionesses, one baboon, three mountain lions, and 18 tigers.

That list only adds up to 46 so what the other two were I have no idea.
 
According to local media (few hours away from scene):
Apparently 56 total. 6 taken to Columbus Zoo.
Monkey still loose, all others accounted for as of 1800 local.
Allegedly tame or not, they were (allegedly) released by the (allegedly) idiot owner and had to have been horribly disoriented and apparently nightfall was coming or was upon them.
Jack Hanna from the Columbus Zoo, and numerous latenight TV appearances, indicated law enforcement did the best they could.
There were 3 grizzlies, 17 lions, 18 tigers in this mix. Any chance of them getting loose in the community would have been unacceptable.
I worked with a guy that had to shoot a Bengal tiger after it killed the owner's child.
I got chased around a house for 5 or so minutes by two loose ostriches that had gotten out of their pen. Huge freaking claws on those things. Could not get back to my car until another cruiser showed up to block them.
Ohio law is a bit lax on exotic animals. I'm guessing that will change soon.
Very sad for the animals.

It is tragic that these animals had to be destroyed, however let's remember that it isn't law enforcements fault that this had to be done. You cannot tazer them, or drug them at night. They must be shot. If not, they will be a threat to both humans and other animals.

They are not in their own habitat. Even the predators would be terrified.

As sad as it is....it is.
 
It is such a pity..
I just saw a photo of a pile of dead animals, it was depressing to see this had to be done..
I realize that the animals posed a great danger to the people, and the local law enforcement does not have the means to capture these beautiful animals..
It is just a GREAT pity it has ended this way..
 
nooooo my comrades..... (current Nickname is 'Tigri', Greek for Tiger), as TeaSea said the animals would be frightened, and if you corner a frightened animal it fights (only had experiences with snakes, spiders and scorpions myself), tragic but i fear it had to be done :(
 
I live about 25 miles to the South of Zanesville where this all happened . My wife happens to work in Zanesville at a hospital just a few miles away . I agree with most of the comments stated so far but believe me , the people you talk to that live around here are animal lovers and a lot are avid hunters also . Most of us really hated the fact that these beautiful animals had to be shot but as someone has already mentioned that since nightfall had already set in they posed a tremendous danger . I just wish this crazy nut case would have just killed himself and left the animals in their cages because he had to have known this probably was going to happen . I would guess that had they been left in their cages the majority probably would have ended up in The Columbus Zoo(An hour to hour and a half away).

The owner probably took his own life because he could no longer feed them, big cats require alot of money to
maintain them. and he set them free before hand. Just a theory? Sadly the wildlife get the short straw most of the time. We had a primate get loose here in Dallas sometime ago, and they shot him too, didn't even try to tranq him.
 
If it was a simple fact of not being able to take care of the animals he could have contacted zoos that would have either taken them or found some place that would take them. All in all, very sad and no one wins.
 
just a terrible tragedy on many levels. I agree the only place blame belongs is on the owner. I feel so sad for the officers who had to do their duty and protect the public in this terrible incident and were put in the horrible position of having to deatroy these beautiful animals. The whole situation is a disaster.
