Exploding

When flying the BOB mission JU88's Over London, one or two of the spits explode on the airfield as they are taking off.

I can't find anywhere anything that would trigger this.

So how does it work??

Ha Ha

...they (ai) just screwed up and crashed into each other whilst trying to scramble...
....(and I don't mean eggs):engel016:

It is a CFS3 issue, AI crash or destroy propeller at take off with several aircrafts on several airfields.

As you are the leader, try to use most of the runway lengh to take off, move your throttle slowly.
If it doesen't work, then, replace the fisrt 'takeoff' waypoint by a 'turn' waypoint. Doing this, you don't have to take off so no problem anymore.

thanks gents.

It doesn't prevent me from getting airborne; I can go around them or slightly off to one side.

It just struck me as odd that it happened in this mission with these planes every time.

If it's just a CFS3 thing, that explains why I can't find anything in the mission or anywhere else to explain it.

It's reminiscent of the problem of the heavy bombers running into buildings before AvHist had the airfield fix.

...methinks it may be connected to the occasional weak tail-wheel on Spits...:kilroy:.....
...was it a Spit?

Yep, it's a Spit.

I moved the takeoff from Hawkinge to Dover, and all is well. Seems to be related to airfield, among other things, as Led Zepplin observed.

Yes in this mission there wasn't anything to do to prevent this..
The spits for whatever reason didn't like taking off.. A bunch of Rookie pilots I guess..LOL..
I spent several hours trying to make it work better and ended with this as it was..
The BOB missions I did for the wonderful Set up built by Clive was a bit of a hurry job, I tried to get several ready for the release in a limited amount of time..I had this problem also..
I haven't had the time to re visit this since I did those for Pat..
Once life settles down here I will re do some of these for everyone.. Things are CRAZY for me right now..
Clive and BOB does deserve more AND BETTER missions..

Those Spits are pesky birds to take off! They, like Me109s, killed pilots on takeoff and landing due to being high powered and light. Spits had narrow undercarriage.

One of the main causes of AI Spits crashing on takeoff (causing the explosions) is because the CFS3 game engine hard-wires an AI response to whatever you are doing on takeoff. Therefore, if you touch your brakes (for example to correct direction when under power and taking off), the AI Spits will also touch their brakes but they tend to do it in an abrupt manner so they nose over and then - KABOOM!

The moral of the story is that IMHO it is more AI behaviour than any characteristic of any particular airbase facility. Its a real bummer on a campaign mission to lose wingmen before engaging the enemy!

Aha! That explains it. Taking off from Manston in Spits this happens almost every time and it's not the same one exploding. From Hawkinge (my favourite airfield) which I use 99% of the time I've never experienced this at all - I guess because my take-offs are better there.

Thinking about it, at Manston the aircraft are fairly close together on the runway, I'll mod the objects.xml and see if it helps

Aha, yes, that should do the trick - creating a bit of space in the taxi area!
Good idea, Clive! It'll help anyway.
