F-105

Well, you guys are making me re-read thud ridge, i know it´s there, but until then, i fired up 3d studio and the F-105G´s mesh, so judge by yourselves:

View attachment 31949

I used a camera to place an "eye point" in the pilot´s office, as you can see in the "camera 01" frame, you can´t see the wing tip, check the angle of the camera, now:

View attachment 31950

I turned the camera even further (to an unrealistic angle), looking for the wing tip, but as you can see in frame "top" you´ll need to see thru the fuselage (wich 3ds does)

Now, for the ECM officer:

No wing, and now forcing the view:

View attachment 31952

You can see it.BUt this is a forced view.
Sometimes Trackir makes us believe we can see stuff that you can´t in reality, since it wont bump your head with the canopy and it does not simulate your body strapped to an ejection seat. You be the judges.

Best regards

Prowler

I don't think it matters that it's taken from the back seat, either. The single seat version has it's seat in pretty much the same place as the back seat in the dual version.

Really, this is an awesome picture, even if there wasn't a disagreement on how much wing you could see.
Not to be a stickler, but I think you have your facts a bit skewed. I think your quoted measurements for single versus dual seat are off and this pic is from a dual seat Thud. Look where the intake is in the dual seated Thud versus the wingmans intake relationship to the canopy on the single seat ship? There's a good few feet difference. Just an observation, could be wrong.

Matt

I think the pilot is 5 feet ahead of the EWO. Prowler has it close enough. Should you turn around and lean back against the rear panel you would see that view. Tough thing to do. But again, with the canopy closed, strapped into the seat and wearing a helmet you are not going to look back at the wing. Been there one night on a "hot taxi" at Nellis in '72. That was a fun ride and that AB is a kick in the butt!!

Wishing for the Thud with today's skill level!!! Gonna be awesome. Guess why my avatar is a 105!

Jim

Maybe the following picture i made will clear things up about the crew positions. The EWO actually was seated in a position slightly behind the normal single seat position.

Cheers.

Thanks Prowler. I looked at your pics, and the lines you have drawn from the pilots head to the intake point and beyond. I'm not so sure that's definitive...those lines could easily flow farther aft. Honestly, my thoughts here have been more centered around the single seat model rather than the dual seat. The dual seat model will obviously have more aft visibility limits if you're sitting up front, over that of the single seat model. No brainer there.

Stryperpsg and hae5904, in regards to where the front seat is EXACTLY, I believe my words were along the lines of "pretty much in the same place". We're not talking about very much distance in where your lines are.

JAllen, that's great you got a night ride in the F-105. Did the pilot let you fly it? Night visibility has it's limitations. I have alot of night flying, so I know the score there

I'm pretty much done with this horse, and it's been interesting hearing everyones take on it. It's very interesting how diferent brains crunch the viewpoint. I would like to reiterate that I know two F-105 pilots (each have in excess of 1600 hours in the plane) and they have told me you can see the wings. I'm going to take their word on it over anyones conjecture or hypothesis.

One more thing for Prowler. I realize TrackIR allows you to see more than what a person could normally see IRL. Even so, with that simism in mind, I would think it good practice to include external modelling that can be seen. I have many of your planes, and they have very acceptable levels of external modelling that can be seen from the VC. Please keep it up.

Russel Smith repaints

All this talk of Migs, F-100s, etc. has whetted my appetite for dragging this lovely old bird out of the hangar.

I'm looking for some repaints - and I could have sworn Russel Smith did a bunch of SEA repaints for the Thud .... I can't find them anywhere. Am I just imagining these, or am I just dumb like rocks? I know of the ones that David Q and Jens did, but that's it ....

FSafranek's were for the FS9 model, as I recall ...

Anyone's memory recall better than mine on this?

thanks,

For some reason, this one (the AS FSX version) did not get a lot of attention from the painters, which is really a shame, because it was really a winner.

Thanks Mal,

I think I was confusing Russel's F-4 SEA paints with this model. I know Frank did a few - but I thought those were for the FS9 model ... will have to check again.

Thanks all the same.

My repaints will work for both FS9 and FSX. The readme file only included install notes for FS9 but common sense and some experience should get you up and flying with them in FSX. If not I can repackage them easy enough.

If you prefer DDS format for FSX just convert them. That's all I did with the original release textures. I can fix that as well.

OK, DONE. Follow the link below...

It got some attention but you're right, not as much as it could have given the long colorful career of the Thud.

There was some nasty distortion in the top of the tail that my original schemes didn't uncover that prevented some ANG repaints. Plus some built in compression distortion that I explained how to correct in the paint kit readme file but as you know, people don't.
