Is anyone out there currently working on a thud? I seem to recall someone was, but I can't remember who.
 
Thats disappointing, RAZBAM would have made a great thud... I have looked at the Alphasim/virtavia, but i have heard that you cannot see the wings, which would be visually irritating, but ill look again.
 
Well, it´s not dead, it´s on hold until we can develop the proper tech to make it shine, we are getting there..

True! And True again! You can't see the wings, and it's irritating. In fact, if you have TrackIR and you turn your head just a bit to either side, you will see open sky just aft of the VC.
 
I am curious what Cliff Presely (a real former F105 driver) who worked on the AS model would say about how much of a 50plus degree wing sweep you actually saw in real life..

I hear what you're saying between the lines. "An F-105 pilot who signed off on the model didn't seem to take issue with it". Well, maybe he did, maybe he didn't, we don't know.

What I do know is that two former F-105 drivers live within three blocks of my parents in Fort Worth. They're buddies of my dad, who is also a former USAF pilot. They'll tell you that you can see the wings, because I've drank beer with them and asked.
 
I'm flying the Thud in my current Strike Fighters campaign.

Great for ground attack runs and somewhat capable in aerial combat, but the high wingloading is a royal PITA. One too many pullouts ended in a BBQ and a fist fight with a MiG is only successful when he has to go home for fuel or ammo deprivation.

Other than that, it's a real hotrod. Kind of like a fat Starfighter.

I guess my real point was, on balance, given the quality of the model, the flight model, the effects, and the available repaints, missing the what, 5 degrees of vision to each side (on this, a non-combat sim) - doesn't fall into the irritating category. Maybe it's just me.

Turn on the NAV lights, then pull a 5g turn while looking over your shoulder (either one, and hopefully you have TrackIR). You'll see either a green or red light, and wingtip condensation streamers flying in formation with you. Do that a few times, and maybe you'll get annoyed. Lol.

Since you're quoting, Skyblazer, here's one I like from "Gods of Tin" that you recomended.

"He could not tell what it was at first. Far out, a strange, dreamy rain was falling, silver and wavering. It was a group of drop tanks, tumbling down from above, the fuel and vapor streaming from them. Cleve counted them at a glance. There were a dozen or more, going down like thin cries fading in silence."

We've all seen the film clips of fighters dropping their external tanks before the merge, but until reading this, I never really considered the implications of 12 to 18 tanks raining down in a group. You wouldn't want to accidently fly through them if you were passing by a few thousand feet below, and you wouldn't want to be on the ground where they hit. Much better to be the dropper than the dropee.
 
It just isn't right for me I dont think. One thing I don't like that alphasim does is generic gauges. Like some of their planes, but.... Anyway RAZBAM I'll wait for you guys.

I've always been interested in the cultural creations of pilots in combat, and I've been particularly drawn to the music of the air war in Vietnam -- both pieces that were produced at the time, and pieces written after the war by its veterans. Some is a little cliche, but I think it is still a good representation of a particular people's folk-ways.

Much of the music is not available on the internet, which is a shame. However, here, for your enjoyment, is a satirical piece written during the war, "What the Captain Means." Perhaps you've heard it, if not, it is a treat.

 
LMAO. I have heard that before, somewhere back in the 1980's. This was like hearing it again for the first time again, it's been so long.

The clip didn't have any Thuds in it...dats way off topic. lol.
