F-8 Crusader

....now all I gotta do is get a compatible airspeed indicator and make the requisite changes.

Still a nice package...

Kent
Hi Kent, If I'm not mistaken the F-4 and F-8 and their variants used the the same ASI/Machmeter.
While not perfect, or even close, I did one one for my Phantom panel(f4panxdcb1_0.zip flightsim) and one without the bezel for the Alphasim/Virtavia Pack 1 fix(here FSX/Panels).

The F-4 panel has all new gauges, many created from actual instrument photos...Don

Re: Same

Here's one for FSX, It's not Alphasim though.

I cannot get the F-8 from AS to load, in FSX. Any ideas?

Hmm. Not sure why that is. Apart from the common and easy to fix few gauges you need to swap out, the AS F-8 model flies and looks better than ever for me in FSX SP2/Acceleration. Check your air.cfg - maybe there have been some changes causing the model to not load?

FSX below. Now if I could just figure out how to shine up that exhaust metal . .

Hello Expat (or anyone else),

Do you mind posting your FSX Accell panel fix? I lost mine after my last FSX reinstall. Hopefully they reference freeware gauges, or gauges from products I own.

As quid pro quo, however, I'll offer my fixed reheat effect aircraft.cfg - looks a lot nicer, using components of the Alphasim F-105/6 effect:

[lights]
//Types: 1=beacon, 2=strobe, 3=navigation, 4=cockpit, 5=landing
light.0 = 4, 23.00, 0.00, 2.00, fx_vclight
light.1 = 6, -10.00, 0.00, 0.00, fx_ALPHA_F105_exh1
light.2 = 9, -15.00, 0.00, 0.00, fx_ALPHA_F105_AB
//light.3 = 7, -11.46,-17.55, 1.33, fx_contrail_Alpha Viggen
//light.4 = 7, -11.46, 17.55, 1.33, fx_contrail_Alpha Viggen

I've killed the contrail effect, since that's an old FS9 requirement.

Many thanks.

DL

PS: as has been already mentioned, this plane flies and looks wonderfully for FSX, Pierre's and Russel's paints are awesome. Only caution, don't bother with the RF-8 repaints - there is no way to properly deal with the missiles in FSX like was possible in FS9 ...

Jamie - that is a sweet looking reheat can .... Do you plan to post? I'll take a few for sure ... In fact, given how easy it is to tailstrike the F-8, I might order a dozen ... :). Thanks in advance.Ps: any help on the gauge replacement is greatly appreciated.

was it yourself that brought this up a year or so ago?

Highly likely. Early age memory loss!!

DL, have replied to your pm. NB: anyone else who may want to use the attached panel.cfg, I have merged the 2D panel from the AS Demon into the F8 panel for better visibilty. F8 VC - which I use mostly - is retained.

. . my attempts to play with the nozzle shine alpha settings just made it more transparent. Curious to know how you do it.

Thanks expat!

I've never played with gauge replacement before, but this may force me to learn how to do that. I'm happy to keep using the existing VC, but need to address the 2 gauges. I like your idea of borrowing from the Demon gauges, so that's the route I 'll try.

Since Sylvain's F-8 will (understandably) take quite a number of months to produce, this model will have to tide us Crusader nuts over for a good while yet ... :jump:

Will experiment tonight and advise.

Okay, first things first, is this freeware now? And is it these models here? http://www.easyfly.co.nz/Freeware/index.php?dir=/USA

I do notice they say FS2002, but the model I have has FS8 in the model header too. I also notice on the same page there is an RF8 too. So maybe a different one, but cannot find a newer one for sale anymore?

Anyway, to add the shine you need to enable reflectivity in the model. This can done a few ways, Hex editing, Scasm editing or by using MDLC by Ivan Hsu/Archisoft. The first two are pretty advanced procedures, luckily the last one is much easier. Download it, read the manual and go. It's a command line proggy, but if that scares you grab Mortons front end for it, mk_MDLC. Both proggies are here in the archives. Once you have enabled reflectivity, you need to add the Alphas to the texs, but you've done that already, hence the transparency.

The later option though easier sometimes has it's own problems, usually with fully reflective gauge plane in the VC, it can be fixed though. Also prop discs and glass can have problems. To fix these requires a simple Hex edit. More on this if anyone gets that far.

The proggies can be found here:
MDLC, mk_mdlc & a free hex editor, FRhED.

I do not have the Crusader installed anymore and I fly FS9 (which shouldn't make a difference). I did one model back then, stopped when no-one seemed interested. I intended to do all of them for my own use at my own pace, that hasn't happened as of yet :d I have too many other things to juggle right now to do them, but soon and if they are now Free I may well do them all and upload them, maybeby then you guys will have a native one, lol.

Hello Jamie,

Unfortunately, this model is not yet freeware. The model we're all talking about (and in your superb screenshot) is the still-payware version released in 2005. The Crusaders in the Alphasim Freeware list are the FS8 models that came out in around 2002 or so.

It's a strange situation, since it is neither avaialble for purchase, nor freeware. Falling out between AS and Carl, the developer is what I surmise - but only a guess.

Anyway, unless this gets released as freeware, it looks like we'll have to somehow figure out the hex edit thing. Then, if you still have the can texture ... may be the only way to make it work.

Thanks for getting back to us .... and also, very curious about this model you worked on ... total news to me. You were working on a post-2005 Crusader? I've not heard about one .... very interested, for what it's worth!! :guinness:

Ah - missed that thread altogether - I was still flying FS9 up to a year ago....

Well, if it materializes, I'm game ... haven't monkeyed with hex editors since the FS8 days, when getting rid of VCs was thought to save on FPS .... boy, that was a bizarre online argument.

Anyway - good to know it can be done, if there instructions, I'm willing to try.

dl

DL,

if you follow the instructions with MDLC and mk_mdlc, you should be fine until you hit the VC gauge plane problem. I have a mini tutorial I wrote for Obio on how to fix it, I'll have to add it to the Wiki for all to try if required. Time permitting.

If you do try and need a hand, PM me, I don't frequent the FSX forum to much, so best way to attract my attention. I do fly X occasionally, have plenty payware for it too, but as with nine, buy too much I don't have time to fly it all :isadizzy: I tinker too much and find 9 more my cup-of-tea for those needs, plus I love loads of AI (in the sky, not bothered about cars and such).

regards,
Jamie

No Marines. That was my old squadron, VFP-63. When the RA-5C Vigilantes were retired in the mid-70's VFP-63 went back aboard the big-deck carriers in 3-plane detachments to provide photo recce capability. Yeah, the RF-8's afterburner made a big boom when it lit off, always scared the new guys on the flight deck. :icon_lol:

Okay I may be confusing them with the RF-4 squadron that we had on the Midway in 1980. They must have been the Marines.

The Marine RF-4B's on Midway were VMFP-3, and VMCJ-1 before them. They deployed pretty much the same way we did in VFP-63 except their dets had more aircraft (5-6) and of course more aircrew and maintenance troops. VMCJ-1 also had a EA-6A (the electric Intruder most people forget about) det aboard Midway when it first forward-deployed to Japan but I know nothing about those guys.
