F8F wip shots

The official Blue Angels insignia was designed by then team leader Lt. Cmdr. R.E. "Dusty" Rhodes and approved by Chief of Naval Operations in 1949. It is nearly identical to the current design. In 1949 the Blue Angels were flying Phantoms.

thought only these 2 teams through the late 40/early 50's to fly the FH-1 Phantom was the Grey Angels (RADM's Dan V Gallery, Edgar A Cruise and Apollo Soucek) andd the other team were a Marines team called the 'Marine Phantoms' a part of VMF-122 out of Cherry Point.

Skyhawka4m, can you identify the carrier the Bearcat is being spotted on? There's something peculiar about the airplane. It shows the squardron crest and yet it wasn't designed until they were flying Phantoms. The F8s only had "Blue Angels" where yours has the crest. Plus the landing gear struts are painted black, not white. The propeller ID is not stenciled in place. It's a peculiar place they are spotting an aircraft. I have a hard time figuring what they are doing. Can you date the picture or provide some more details?

I'll hunt down the image and see what I can find sir.

In my mind, Phantoms, in the context of the Blue Angels, always meant F-4 - I wasn't even thinking FH-1.

In 1949 the Blue Angels were transition from Bearcats into Panthers. They picked up again after Korea in Panthers and never, to my knowledge, flew the FH-1. The Marine Grey Angels flew the FH-1, making them (I believe) the first use of jet demonstration aircraft.

The whole point being, it's perfectly reasonable to have seen a Bearcat wearing the Blue Angels crest - didn't fly it for long with it, but it obviously did for some portion of '49. That explains Skyhawks shot of the crest-bearing Bearcat.

I'm glad you all like the VC, it's a great mesh, and texturing it was a real pleasure :)

I'll poke dean about the defogger, it was relatively high-res when I turned it in, however may have been downsized due to performance.
