F9F Panther Paints

While WarHorse47 digs around for -5Ps, here's the next dash 5...

Unfortunately I was unable to find any actual photos of these markings. I did manage to find at least 2 artists renderings and one model decal sheet for VF-154 with yellow lightning bolt nose flash. All 3 of these sources showed variations on the nose flash design. So, armed with artistic license, I chose the one I thought looked best. All other markings are as depicted on the decal sheet. Accuracy of these markings is 100% dependent on the accuracy of the Decal sheet!

Thanks, Steve. I'm off to download now.

I'm still trolling for some -5P schemes. Apparently, only 36 aircraft were produced so that makes for some slim pickings.

The original VS package has four -5P textures, plus the one you created for VF-162. VMJ-1 is the one squadron missing, if I read that right.

This site might generate some ideas.

Thanks Pips!

Oops! Forgot to mention it's not up yet. I'll get that done by this afternoon.

As for -5Ps, you're right, there weren't that many produced and several colorful/unique examples are included with the VS package and I think Zoltsquack did one also.

8 Ball!

WIP, still lots to do, especially the finish. It won't have a mirrored finish but my aim is to have a worn aluminum look. It will have shine but not a lot of reflectivity.

Duckie, beautiful job on the VC-61 "8-Ball" photo bird. I'd say you have the metal finish just about right. :encouragement:

Thanks very much Jankees and TARPSbird. TARPS, the finish is close but still a couple more adjustments to look at.

Steve

Just one more Panther repaint. VF-84 Sidewinders, circa 1954 aboard USS Lake Champlain. Uploaded just now.

Thanks Jankees. The bare metal LE is part of the paint kit from VS. It needed some "cleaning up" around the edges but nothing serious.

Those are just awesome! Thank you so much for making and sharing those!

Has anyone ever seen the NACA/NASA paint scheme? They flew an F9F-2 at Langley Field, and it was around long enough that it was there for the transition to NASA. I've only found pics of the NACA markings, though.

Thank you DennyA, and you are very welcome.

I have seen those photos. The external appearance between it and a standard -5 is noticeably different with the long nose probe, the chin "bump" and the smoke generator or spin chute (hard for me to tell?) being some obvious ones.

Very nice work Duckie... like the bare metal or is that silver paint? :encouragement:

Thanks Ted. It's supposed to be just plain ole bare aluminum on an operational -5P before they went gray. Wing tank noses are polished, and the mirror finished plates on the FWD inboard for pilot visual on stores and gear.
