Fairchild Super 71 Released

Charter Member 2014
My rendition of the Fairchild Super 71 bush plane is now up at flightsim and simviation.

The Fairchild Super 71 was a parasol mounted high wing monoplane cargo transport aircraft built by Fairchild Aircraft Ltd. (Canada). It was the first plane designed specifically for use as a bush plane in the remote and northern locales of Canada.
The cockpit was positioned back of the wing to allow for a large cargo area under the wing. Only one Super 71 was built with that configuration because the test pilots complained about poor visibility. Three others were built with the cockpit in front of the wing. I have seen only a few pictures of that version and it completely destroyed the sleek lines of the plane in my opininon. Consequently I chose to model the "one of a kind" version with the cockpit behind the wing. It was the first Canandian design with a all metal monocoque fuselage. It first flew in 1934. The fuselage arrangement does remind me of the Northrop "Gamma" series of aircraft.

This is a native FSX Acceleration model. It has the usual animations and reflective DXT5.dds textures. I could not find any documentation of the cockpit, so I based the VC on the afore mentioned Northrop Gamma. The VC has working gauges and animated flight controls. The gauges are back lighted for night ops.

This seaplane does have one small problem that I have observed to some extent with all seaplanes in FSX; when you land it doesn't want to come to a complete stop. Usually, just reducing the prop pitch to zero takes care of this, but not with this model. It still wants to puddle along at about 10 knots. I have to kill the engine to completely stop. I don't know the variables in the FDE that might control this behavior. Once stopped it will stay stopped .

Best, Paul

FSX Fairchild Super 71. The Super 71 was developed as a "bush" transport by the Canadian arm of Fairchild Aircraft. Four were built, but only one had the "behind the wing" cockpit as modeled here. This is a native FSX Acceleration model. It has the usual animations and DXT5.dds reflective textures. The VC has working gauges, animated flight controls and backlighted gauges. By Paul Clawson.

Great looking plane Paul!

I havent heard of this model of Fairchild. I thought I had seen them all.

Nicely done.

Looks like all the aircraft manufacturers were trying to make planes back then that carried about 4 to 6 people, or a ton of mail.

Paul;

A great job, congratulations.

I made the Fairchild FC-1, FC-2, FC-2W2, and 71 for FS2002/FS2004 a couple of years ago, and buried back in the hanger is a not-finished Canadian Fairchild 82.

It is neat to look at your model, and see both the differences and simularities between the various planes. I remember seeing the Super 71 in my research, and what you developed looks exactly like what I remember.

Thanks for the kind words. I was really intrigued by the looks of this plane, sort of a high wing Northrop Gamma on floats! I am using it to tool around all the islands in Puget Sound. Too bad it wasn't more successful.

Pam did a neat job on the repaint. I did not really map this very well for repaints; all the struts from one paint swab, etc. I did this model with FSDSv3.51 and FSXTweak.
I will gladly make the .fsc source code available to any repainter that has FSDS and wants to take the time to remap it. Just email me or send me a PM.

Best, Paul

you did fine Paul. Half the reason it looks as good as it does is because of the simplified mapping you did :).. It just lends itself to being well balanced.. believe me, i couldnt have done that well on my own ( i'm being honest here :) )

I'd be happy too :). Let me get a cup of coffee in me and wake up a bit and i'll make sure she gets up there..
I put straps on her booties last night and over all tied the final touches for her floats down.. Also did a tiny bit more in the VC.. The floor plate is chromed now, and the panel is wood to match the wood from the cargo area..
Took her up to give you folks some updated photos over Puerto Princessa this mornign.. FSX gave me quite a show.. Hope you enjoy..
Pam

I'll be one of the first downloaders! Really beats the rather blah factory paint. :salute:
