Famous Airliner Renderings of planes that never really made it.

Very cool site Bill. It's odd,....I found myself liking more of the 'old' paint jobs than the current ones. Maybe it's nostalgia.....but not sure.

The ones I was drawn to were the Dreamliner renderings with that cool canopy shape and wings and rudder. Awesome shape design. Too bad it ended up looking like your normal everyday 737 with straight edges and same canopy design.

Do728...:(
(Might do that one someday maybe.)

- I'm really glad that Boeing changed the 787's cockpit windows. The ones from the concepts were quite ugly.

- The DC Twin looks like an A310 with the DC-10s more swept wings.

- The Let 610 is quite sexy.

- Same for the TWA A318, but I like TWA's last livery anyways. :)

No MD-119 though?

And no DC-8?

Also, here's something a bit more local:

Interflug made it never past the IL-62. The IL96-300 and Tu-204 took way too long to enter service and Interflug's days were forced to an end before the new generation of russian airliners were ready (1992 and 1995 respectively).
Instead, IF went for Airbus A310s and (shortly) even wet-leased austrian Dash 8s.

And here's the Baade 152, a 100%(!) east german 1950s(!) passenger jet(!) which flew from 1958 to 1961 (one prototype crashed; rumours of sabotage) before the program was axed by the government (due to pressure from the russian brothers in arms?).

No no; it never stood a chance because it was an aweful aircraft. It originally did not fly with the turbofans in the picture; but four fuel thirsty versions of the Tumansky Rd-9b engines used in the MiG-19, mounted B-52 style in two side-by-side pods. They also produced poor thrust for their weight.

It also had a tandem main landing gear with outriggers like the B-52; which chewed up valuable cargo and baggage space; while the cabin ceiling was obstructed by the wing spar box. The tandem landing gear made landing more tricky than a tricycle landing gear.

Compared to the products offered in the west or even in the Warsaw Pact; it didn't stand a chance.

But consider that the country basically got robbed of most of its industry directly after WW2 and only had about 16 million inhabitants...

As for the aircraft concept itself, most of the early jets were awful by today's standards. And the performance of the 152 doesn't seem to bad as well. 3000ft takeoff, 1200ft for landing and 850kph cruise speed.
Also, economy gernerally wasn't important in socialist states (airlines were purely state-funded anways).
Just look at the Tu-134. Fairly large, but only 70 passengers...

Here's a promo film for the 152:
