Firefox

BTW, what ever happened to NetScape? I used it years ago.

I was a Netscape man myself! That was a brilliant browser.

Its like it up and disappeared... Odd.

After Netscape did it's little stint as an ISP instead of just a browser package supplier, Netscape Navigator just kinda fizzled out. Official support for Netscape ended this past spring.
You can still DL the older versions of it here.
http://browser.netscape.com/releases

Netscape was built around the Mozilla engine so in effect, the same basic concept still lives on over at Mozilla.
If you like the all-in-one concept that you had with Navigator, check out Mozilla SeaMonkey.

I've been tempted to try out SeaMonkey, but FireFox (browser) and Thunderbird (email) as separate programs has been working great on my machines.

Willy,

If you get Opera and try it out, check this;

Set up your fave 9 websites in the 'Speed Dial' section.

Hit Control - T to bring up Speed Dial page, hit your web selection where you want to go to, from number 1 through 9, hit enter, done.. page shows up. Lets say slot 1 is SOH. Hit Control/T, then 1, then Enter, done.. SOH site is there.

Hit Control/W to close a Tab. A Tab is a Browser window. You can have tons of Browser windows running simultaneously, and they are connected through a jump key; Control/Tab. You can select 'View Thumbnails' in the Control/Tab selector mini-window to see visually what you are selecting, making it easier to select a Browser (Tab) at say a website where you have several windows open.

If you close out of Opera (turn it off totally) the next time you boot it up, its right where you left it.

You can hit Control/W many times till all your Tabs are closed out, clearing it all down to the Speed Dial page, then close, and you have a clean start when you boot up next time.

There are some more shortcut keys, but I havent figured them all out yet.

Pretty cool to check out. You can always delete it if you dont like it. This hasnt locked up on me yet. Im not used to that. IE7 was locking up about 10 to 20 times a day, and that is no joke.. Absolute truth. If I went to SOH, then back to Yahoo, it locked up. Had to be shut off with Control/Alt/Delete...

I've used FF since ver 2.01 or so and have loved it. Added Thunderbird for mail and Sunbird for calendar/scheduling. but the best thing I found was Foxmarks. I have three computers that I often use. Foxmarks allows me to add bookmarks on any one and then synch them to all three transparently. Greeat for when I travel and then get home.. as soon as I run FF the bokmarks are updated on the desktop machine.
The only issue I had was that when 3.0 came out I tried it and ran into a real pain with java-heavy pages loading so I went back to FF2.0.0.14 which has been updated to 2.0.0.18 and is delightfully stable.
3.0 is due for a new test (Beta 2) once I get home for Mexico

Interesting, just installed Firefox and I don't seem to be able to log in here when using it. Not Good. Guess I'll try Opera next.

Opera sounds real nice, but I have been a confirmed Firefox user for the last three years. Uploads and downloads are way faster than IE?!

I'll change when FF starts to try and do too much like IE. The simpler the browser , the better I like it. I have never changed my Home Page from the Google Search pager that FF opens by default to; quick, easy, and ready for service, no time wasted for Comcast's Home Page :bs: and pop-ups.

It could be that you have not yet saved any cookies for SOH in FF yet. FF doesn't use the IE cookies and stores them in a different place hence the problem logging on. FF also has an inbuilt password manager so that will also need the login info to enable you to log in automatically.

:redf::redf: It helps to remember that you changed your password:redf::redf:

Willy,

If you get Opera and try it out, check this;

another neat feature worth exploring is the tiny little search box on the right off the address window. if you click on google or wiki (or you can add youtube or any other searchable site) then type in what you are looking for.
hit shift+enter and your results come up in a new tab, and only for the site you chose to search, not the entire web. you can also create your own mouse gestures, and you also need to check the widgets. there are zillions of them. for example, even while off line, i can bring up any guitar scale in any key, of any style. major, minor, pentatonic, phrygian, byzantine, japanese, whatever. download the connect 4. i garantee you cannot beat it. i did tie it once though

Dang.... I'll try that right now. Thanks Cheezy.

:ernae:

I am learning how to keep less Tabs/windows open. Typing in a 1 or 6 in the address bar and hitting Enter for a Speed Dial keeps a new Tab from opening, which helps for system memory.

Did I see that Opera can display a 3D stack of its open Tab browser windows? or was that a different browser? (Might be a diff one as I havent found anything like that in the Help section of Opera).

i don't know, i haven't seen anything about that, but if you check their forums someone can tell you and they are pretty quick to answer. btw, the blog set up they have is pretty nice if you haven't checked that out already . sadly, i haven't done much with mine in a while :redf:

What's Thunderbird?

nightTrainNThunderbird.gif

in which case i would have to admit i'm using outlook express because it seems to work ok for me and i haven't bothered to try something else
:d

Been playing around surfing to my usual spots on the net this evening in Firefox 3.0.4. Seems to work pretty good. I can't say as it's any better than IE6, but it's different.

Thunderbird is the Mozilla equivalent to OE. I'm like Cheezy there, I can go either way.

Have you try a large upload or download yet Willy?

If the lines are not blogged up, Firefox will upload and download way faster for me than IE over my cable connection.

Essential when you like to upload paints here and videos to YouTube or where ever. For my modeling articles, I usually send them packages in an email to the webmaster.

Ok... I am converted to Opera now.. lol.. (I keep thinking of the name Oprah, for some reason).

Anyways.. I mistakingly found a new, cool Shortcut.

First, you have all speed dials set.

Hit 'Control/'number' for the website you wish to go to without opening a new tab/browser.

Control-1, yahoo, Control-9, google, etc...

To quote a famous British/Irish beer commercial; BRILLIANT! :ernae:
