first flight

In the mean time I have to admit it looks really nice. I managed to pan around with the hat switch, but I still don't understand the drone view. Most of the times my aircraft doesn't do anything anymore in drone view, but sometimes it does things I don't tell it to do. What's the plan?

Now all I want is more aircraft, preferably military aircraft with piston engines.....

Pressing "C" while using the drone camera will toggle the ability to control of your aircraft

The drone view works best if you have an Xbox controller plugged in.
You can still have your normal controls plugged in as well but I found its best if you go into the control option and remove all the aircraft control assignments from the Xbox controller so you don't get any conflicts.

Mister Beans, Sir, can you please explain a little about this 'drone view' ?

F.i. what exactly makes it preferable to use/take screenshots over 'normally' flying your aircraft, go into external view, and take screenshots ?

Does it f.i. resemble/replace the now abandoned 'Slew Mode' ? But this time without your actual aircraft get in the way ?....

Could this 'drone view' perhaps be the instigator of the fair amount of negative comments saying that MSFS is "just a scenery viewer" ?

Would you say that this 'drone view' CAN actually be called a 'scenery viewer' ?

I have been messing around with it a couple times but still can't make heads nor tails of it.

Like you say, an Xbox controller works best. Would it be worth buying such a thing just for this purpose you think ?

Thanks a lot ! :encouragement:

Yes, yes, and yes. :)

I use an Xbox One controller, and by default MSFS has all of the drone (and slew) functions pre-assigned for the Xbox controller. Using the drone camera and the Xbox controller, it is as if you're "flying" a remote-controlled drone, which is the camera, around the aircraft, anywhere in space that you want, allowing you to put the camera as close and as far away and as high above and as down below as you want, completely free of the aircraft. You can pan the camera in any direction, you can angle the camera in every degree, you can control the zoom, change the brightness, change the focus, and other functions. The drone camera does not affect the positioning of the aircraft (though that is of course what slew is used for, a completely separate function).

All of my screenshots are taken with the drone camera.

I had a look, but these things (xbox controllers) are not cheap. Does it matter which one I buy?

Another question: there's a bunch of aircraft that I will never use and that just clutter my aircraft selection window. Can I just delete them? Or will that mess up things? Anybody tried that?

Hi Jan Kees,

Think so, all gauges etc are in different folder. If you only want to deactivate them you can rename the "layout.json" to "layout.json.off" in the aircraft folders:
Example: ..\Official\OneStore\asobo-aircraft-b787-10\

Ah, Marcel,

your cub paint inspired me to try as well:

This is me dumping my textures in your folder, in my own, similar, folder they don't show for some reason. So much to learn...

You could probably use any console type controller that works with PC but you'd probably need to set the buttons up your self, the Xbox one is plug and play.

Although I haven't tried this myself, I've read that people use the Content Manager to remove stuff they don't want. That would appear to be the 'official' route. Then you can also easily add it back in later if desired.

Dont use the Xbox controller,,very touchy and hard to control. I use an RC radio and that gives me smooth, perfect control..

As for painting,,,I paint for FSX and P3D developers and looked into painting a few planes for 2020,,,,they make it as complex as possible so that is on the back burner.

Ok, thanks, John, Xbox One controller it is ! (just ordered one, 29,95 euro, not that expensive. Not sure about the 2,5 meter wire.. (my puter sits next to me underneath the desk..)

All of my screenshots are taken with the drone camera.

Well, actually that's my point, John. Maybe with exception of the inside cockpit shots from your latest screenshot series ( the red VL-3, nifty looking plane!) i would not be able to tell if your screenies are shot 'normally' in exterior mode or via drone camera (ususally you have your aircraft in view as well ).

I always thought shooting screenies in FSX/P3D (and before) was very comfortable using slew mode with which the aircraft could be easily positioned in relation to the sun and its own position along its axes via the numberpad keys at the same time. It became second nature rather quickly.

Atm frustration all around when i hit that 'Y' Slew button. I mean, no way that i could find to position the aircraft anything other than that insignificant look at its back. Luckily i just found that i need to hit 'numlock' first to use Slew keys. I guess this'll all be water under the bridge once i start using that Drone View with my Xbox controller. Atleast i hope so. Hehe

Thanks again ! :encouragement:

Drat! Too late ! :dejection:

I have such a digital RC gadget sitting on the shelve here as well... Great fun flying digital RC models
with it (Real Flight IIRC ) but haven't used it for years.

And is that Plug and Play right away so to say ?...... Or did you have to assign the lot ?

Anyway, i have ordered such an Xbox controller. Maybe i'll buy a game to play with it. Red Dead Redemption 2 looks quite amazing but a tad or two too violant for my taste probabely.

You will not like the xbox controller....as for your rc radio if it has a usb plug,,plug it in and go into the sim controller settings and it should show up,,click on the header for it and, yes, you will have to stat from scratch...

Ok, thanks, Teisco. Will try this Xbox controller first, i do like the idea that all functions are preset.

Btw, very ingenious of you to think of that RC radio to use for the MSFS Drone view.

Are you still using it to fly digital RC models ?

And thanks for the tip ! :encouragement:
