RainFall Totals

Here is a follow up.....

If your scoring at home........

Rainfall totals up to the last Toowoomba Event for 2011 (10-1-2011).

Doesn't include those prior Christmas Events 2010........So these are some whoppers for Brisbane, the highlands,Rockhampton, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba/Warwick, and others. Duration of the events was also a extreme. These amounts came down in a short period of time. Not 10 days but less than 1 in Toowoomba case.


Also, was in question where the rain came from for Goondiwindi..........Looks like unseasonable high numbers for that upper catchment.......especially from the upper NSW portion that comes down thru Boggabilla (Stanthrope and Glenelg). But Texas and Coolmunda up there too for such a large area. Again...this doesn't include anything at the end of December 2010. So It too compounded the problem.
And....the duration or intensity was key here also.

Note: (These are unofficial numbers ...........from a farmers report online)
 
Interesting charts...very rare to see places in southern Queensland easily outstripping the northern wet tropical areas....then again we still have plenty of wet season to go yet.
 
Incorrect on rainfall

Just as a correction

these table above are are up to 11-1-2011........

Doesn't include the Toowoomba Rain event on that day......

as of 17-1-2011 toowoomba has recieved 403mm.

Toowoomba had 56mm for the entire month of January 2010.

So these figures would be higher for the total Brisbane Catchment and make the rainfall even more astronomical.

Similiarly for the Goondiwindi Catchment........

Stanthorpe got 67mm on that day of 11-1-2011....

making a total of 156mm as of 11-1-2001 on a saturated catchment.

Normal rainfall for Stanthorpe last year got 55mm. Stanthorpe is up to 183mm as of 17-1-2011.

I will stop report figures........since I can't get them straight.............

Katrina and Flood Resistant Design

After Katrina........

Design of housing to be flood resistant became a hot topic.......

Unfortunately, poor economics conditions and low affordablity are the reason why most live in a flood plain.

A new house is just not an option....

But, there was alot of assistance after Katrina that paid a large portion of the cost.

I see there is talk of 1,000 australia dollars per adult and 400 per child in relief.

But that doesn't buy a new modern design house or the demolition of a old one.

Still, the bottom floor is concrete, open, or muck out ready..........like a garage. Second floor should be well above Flood level and easy access from the ground (or river if need be).

In Australia, wood eating insects abound and would require an cider block design and metal roof. I like AAC since it is mold resistant.
