Flight AI and Marksmanship AI-- same or different?

The Prisoner of Zenda...'He who fights and runs away...lives to fight another day'. But, I'm used to P2 where the first hit gets the fuel tank or oil sump in my plane, so as soon as I see or hear that I took a hit, if I'm over enemy territory, I head back to my side PDQ, anticipating imminent engine failure. I can't say if the same occurs in P3 because when I've been hit, I've been mauled. I thought the first burst took away some of my control but in the replay, I noticed I was hit many times before I realized it, so the first bullets/hits I saw were like the third or fourth time, so the damage I received, while seeming unrealistic, was reasonable after all.

I have had the "replay" tell me that I fired from as close a .483 ft! Not 483 but .483. I don't think I ever got that close.

So having one's plane crippled, to some degree or other, by a single good burst does simulate that fear and need to get away quite well, in my opinion.

I find a very short burst by the AI, and from a long way away, will often, nay, mostly, "cripple" you to the extent that you cannot control the plane and you crash.
When you put a short burst into the AI, that very rarely happens.

"Realism" does not equal extremely unlikely or impossibility :)

I'm just saying that the balance needs shifting somewhat.

Guys just some input on this to say we are looking into it and I believe we may have a metres/feet issue - we will post details soon!

Gremlims have a long history of getting into the unit conversions of aviation. IIRC, a couple years ago a multi-billion dollar Mars probe crashed on re-entry instead of deploying its parachute due to a meters/feet issue in its altimeter. A few years before that, an airliner ran out of fuel and crashed, killing a bunch of people, due to a miles/kilometers issue when they were gassing it up.

So, having a feet/meters issue in OFF just makes it that much more realistic IMHO :jump:. Sorry, I couldn't resist :173go1:.

But anyway, having the AI shoot further than the players in a game is no big deal compared to some of the real-life disasters unit conversions have caused, so please don't sweat it. Keep up the good work.

Yeah..they count the distance in feet, yards and miles, weight in pounds, forces in lbs....
Thank God they dont count time differently.
Imagine...
"John Doe lived for 34 years and died"
"He died young."
"No he didnt. It is 34 U.S. years which is about 80 normal years *Duh*!"

Bullet:
I believe the incident you were referring to was the famous Gimli Glider. Where the metric issue caused an Air Canada plane to run out of fuel and they had to do a deadstick landing at a retired RCAF station in Gimli Manitoba. No one was killed or injured but I believe a bunch of the people using the runway as a go cart racetrack at the time had to to go home for a change of underware.:costumes:

Thank you - very much appreciated! :applause:

I second that - The support this sim is given is light years ahead of every other sim I have played. Only BOB comes anywhere near, and that is from a bunch of enthusiast devs too. Says a lot about the professionals, IMHO.
Thanks Winder, et al.

Yeah, I know about that one, fortunately with a happy ending. I think that was a gallons/liters issue. The one that killed people was something else. I can't remember exactly but IIRC it was on the National Geographic Channel's "Air Emergency" or "Seconds from Disaster" series last year.

I still don´t know, why mankind still uses imperial/metric measurements? We should decide, to use just one, wether it is metric or imperial. Saves a lot of problems.:friday: I guess it should be the most precise one. But to be honest, I don´t know which is it?

it would make it a whole lot simpler for sure if even CFS3 used 1 type of units imperial or metric, let alone the world :)
It is totally mixed even in the same config file, and in some places the wrong units, keeps you on your toes for sure..

Onward!

That's rather ethnocentric, don't you think? I say we should all switch to whatever traditional system the Chinese used. They'd win if we put it to a vote, you know ;).

Wasn't CFS3 made by the same folks who brought us Windows? :monkies:

While I appreciate the purist point of view as relates to OFF's realism (read difficulty), there are those of us who would want to enjoy the great WWI sim that OFF is but at a less demanding level given the limitations of a computer monitor display among other reasons.
This way the purists can fly the sim accordingly yet allow those of us who don't subscribe to that level of realism to enjoy the sim in their way.[/quote]

:amen: I also would appreciate the ability to have more control over this area of OFF3

Another old fart that tries to fly

That's OK Winder. NASA had the same problem and it cost them a very expensive Mars probe :ernae:

Yeah lol well I can confirm we defo have a metres/feet issue here - will look at a hotfix soon - working as fast as we can.

Well there isnt any "most precise" metric system. There used to be C.G.S. which was converted to S.I. system. There are countries that use the Imperial metric system but since 2008 there was an agreement that all countries should use the S.I. system officially. Of course if you go to the U.S. and ask an old lady for directions she is going to tell you to turn right after 100 yards of walking and not after 110 meters of walking. But these stuff take some time...:faint:...it is a big change.
