Flight1's new P51D

Yes, though the real question should be- "do we really need another P-51D?"

I'd do anything for someone to release something that ISN'T a D.

Usually it is best to go for a more commercially viable subject, hence the "D"model which is most people's favourite expression of the "Mustang"family.

Outside of the MS stock version, I am unaware of too many FSX native "D"s out there...

Personally I'd like to see an "A" model but from a sales point of view, it is probably a bit too niche.

Bazz, the best thing from this thread is to hear from you again. You have been avoiding us for too long!

The Mustang look stunning, especially the VC is gorgeous! And I already love the pilot ;)

Cheers,
Huub

Hi Huub,

Well not avoiding exactly just busy keeping wolves from doors and concentrating on my other businesses.

We build under contract mostly these days so not a lot of time for this sort of thing from AH's perspective.

Still, we hope to have time this year to get at least one new release in the AH hangar...it's been a while!:engel016:

We have been very fortunate in Flight 1 having an association with Maurice Hammond, owner of Marinell and Janie. His business builds engines for most of the top operators of P51Ds and is very well respected in the Warbird community.

So, we have had direct access not only to the aeroplanes but also Maurice's considerable knowlege of the type and the mechanical processes.

Everything in that cockpit works as it should and the engine management and performance will be guaranteed to be on the numbers. otherwise, Maurice isn't going to OK it!:engel016:

SOLD! Un-like some people I'm of the opinion that one can NEVER have too many ponies! That and the fact that Bazzar has ALWAYS been a great friend to our community! SOLD:applause:

The question shouldn't be do "we" need another P-51D but do "you" need another one. I'm not sure if I like it when other people speak for me? :engel016:

Well put - there is a lot of that around here - I will buy any P-51D that looks as good as this - and also the A2A accusim version when it comes out. More the better!!

yessir... it is a case of buying both for me too.... and a 3rd with the Warbirdsim C pony.

All of them are well crafted aircraft, each delivering quality releases in the past and all of them have contributed much to our community. I have to support those teams of developers.

So I will be starting a pony ranch! Looks like a big year for filling the warbird hangar collection... Stangs,Hellcat,Corsair,Catalina,Lightning,15s and 14s.

..and whatever else comes down the line!

If the real thing has bumps - i want bumps :bump:

But it doesn't.......!!

This is Don Emerson's 'Donald Duck' at the RAF Museum in London. Rivetting produces dents anyway and Bomber_12th's and the A2A hi-def paint kit reproduce this effect better than bump mapping - just my humble opinion.

Still, each to his own! Great plane whatever Bazzar!!

Is it just me or does this one have a giant pilot? Look at the Warbirdsim version to see what I mean.

Well, two things.

First, the restored examples depict Maurice Hammond in his famous bone dome. A pilot with a modern jet style dome helmet always looks bigger in a warbird.

Secondly, the "body" of our pilots has always been scaled proportionately to the airframe. You can (if you could) swap out the pilot from the P51D and put him into anmy one of our warbirds and he'd fit right in. That includes, Spitfire, Me109,P38,Hurricane, Lancaster, Mosquito and even the Grumman F3F.

Whilst Maurice is not quite the svelt trim taught and terific he used to be I am sure he wouldn't appreciate being called "giant":engel016:

I will never say we have too many warbirds but the P-51 is getting repeated too often. I guess its a safe bet. We have a growing selection of planes so what I would like to see are some time period sceneries. I would kill for some teeth for these birds but that aint going to happen. Next best thing would be some airfields, target areas ect. All I can do now is pretend Im some rich guy flying to the next airshow in his restored fighter.

Please bear in mind, as I have pointed out earlier in this thread, the pics are beta and bumps have advanced a fair bit since these were taken. The normal (bump) mapping tools are very powerful and excellent dimpling, panel ripples etc. can be achieved in time with care.:engel016:

Wow that helmet makes all the difference. Thanks for pointing that out.

That was my point. though you have to read between the lines. There are many aircraft that could/should be built in MSFS, but they remain neglected. I understand the sales side of things, but (and this is my opinion only, I don't speak for anyone else) the P51 has saturated. Between competitors and excellent freeware I (that is me, no one else) cannot afford another one. I hope the release is a success. I really do.

Hmm , there is an ideal scenery package for your Mustang , Warbairds Over Wanaka , the airshow comes alive on the dates during Easter ... and its all Warbirds ! DANG .. I fly every WWII fighter outta there first time , you have the valley's , lakes and home to a gorgeous photoreal purpose built airfield .. ..... I'm looking for a P-51 .. window shopping at the mo , but this aircraft is crying out for me .. :engel016:

I think the lower sill of the "Malcolm" hood increases the effect also. If you look closely the two pilot figures are more or less the same in size.

Wow, are we really going to see a 'restored' P-51 with a civilian cockpit? I didn't get anywhere asking the guys at A2A for this, but I do respect why they didn't want to make one. I'm another definite customer for both versions, there just can't be enough P51s (or Spitfires) for me. Is this one going to whistle and scream?

Yes the sound pack will have the characteristic gunport whistle.

Marinell and Janie are restored examples and the decision was made in their restoration, to have the cockpits as close to stock as possible. We were asked to replicate the two aircraft as they are today. The remaining models in this release will be wartime machines and carrying selectable weapons.

The P51D is indeed a regular subject in FS but I think "saturated" may be a little exagerated.

Can somebody tell me then, aside for the stock racer, exactly how many P51D models built specifically for FSX there are?:engel016:

I guess we can say we have two real new FSX designs in the works - this one and A2A's. If this one does have a B/C model with or without the Malcolm hood and a modern panel, then I'm interested.

Having said that, the recent update to A2A's Mustang is a very well done work of art.

Sold twice over then!

To the nearest whole number, that works out to a big fat zero - and 'X is how old now? After a drought like that I can certainly live with two coming out in the same year.
