• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

Flightsim.com up for sale

It would be a shame to see it go. Admittedly I only ever used the site for the file library and never read the forums but I did enjoy flying the 'Round The World Race' with/against them every year and a dear friend and co-member of LDR was a long standing FS.com member and RTWR team member over there (Roman Stoviak, RIP buddy I still miss you!)

When talking about an icon like flightsim.com I would agree. But the way they handled their migration to the new software was just badly done. Compare it to how it was done here. @Dangerousdave26 just did a stellar job. It was all well prepared and for the move of the file repository, there were loads of volunteers. That too was well coordinated and done meticulously. We also went live only after everything was checked. Not so in flightsim.com. They did things top down, over here there was involvement. That is a huge difference. Members feel that and they appreciate that too.

What I meant to say in my reply to Charlie is just the fact that there aren't many sites like ours left. We could be a refuge to the membership of flightsim.com. Remember that most of us are in the "old coot" segment of the flightsim public. Platforms like discord and the likes maybe the future, most of the older flightsimmers just don't like it. I know I don't. And I work in IT.

Another thing to consider is that the membership of flightsim.com is quite different to ours. Welcoming them (which I would, wholeheartedly!) could mean a cultural shift. SOH has always been "different" in being the "Combat Flight Center".

All of the above are things that need careful thought.

I'll finish by saying the following: Although my current account doesn't show it, I've been coming here for a looooong time. I've just been coming back time and again even after the darkest periods in my life. You know why? Because I love SOH. This is a special place. All of us should do everything we can to keep it in the air.

It's also 'different' because it was started by a group of 'FlightSim Renegades, Outlaws and Scofflaws' (as hailed in our front page declaration) who had been banned from other sites and so decided to start their own forum where they could be who they wanted to be and fly the WWII aircraft they loved! The SOH online multiplayer server used to be full of pilots every night who flew with total disregard of rules, regulations and 'bossy' ATC and we flew where wanted, in what we wanted and landed on whatever runway we fancied regardless of wind direction! I miss those days! We used to have a dozen or more people on the TeamSpeak voice server every night and now I can go for weeks and never hear another voice (it is still used by some of the CFS guys in their own dedicated channels though).

That is what I miss the most about this site....

For my part life is not the same as it was 10+ years ago.

I still hope to someday to capture a few of those hours again.

I can't take credit for all of our success. Especially not the file library. That was a team effort that even I didn't think could happen.

27,000.+ files moved in just shy of 3 months.
 
I, along with many others, did nothing else but move files day in, day out, for weeks! I was happy to help our esteemed librarians with the move.
 
For the Record, I have always thought of SOH as leaning towards the "Military" side of the hobby as compared to the other FS Sites, and I have absolutely no problem with that. :)

I started a Club over at FlightSim to administer "Group" events like picking a historical route and getting folks together to all fly it. We've done the old Bendix race route, Route 66, an Australian tour, and PP has done several with just Helicopters.

I fear that if FlightSim is sold, there goes the Club. Hope it doesn't happen, but it could.
 
We have our TeamSpeak3 server here and we also host a dedicated JoinFS server (cross-platform that supports FS9/FSX/P3D and MSFS 2022/4) that could be used for multiplayer events like that. Multiplayer events used to happen every night at one time. Myself and Rob (srgalahad) still get on quite regularly and either fly flight plans that one or the other has created or we fly old 'hop lists' that we have converted into flight plans. We have also recreated old airline scheduled routes from time to time too.

Has anyone tried a re-creation of Corporate/Blackbuck? :unsure:
Get your Vulcan tuned up then fly from Waddington to Ascension/Wideawake then on to the Falkland's and back?

Several years ago, I posted about doing a different kind of Christmas flight- an actual "Looking Glass" eight hour patrol flight over the US in an EC-135. :cool:

The Group events we ran were a mixture of civilian aircraft, helicopters, autogiros and one who's the Airliner type. The Bendix went off the premise of using Surplus WW2 fighters.

I don't know how a Group event would be received by the folks here...

How about the ultimate game of "hounds and hares"?
Multiplayer (which I've never done), a group of three B-52's takes off from Andersen AFB (Guam) and flies mostly west-north-west.
At some point, a group of KC-135's from Kadena AFB (Okinawa) takes off and flies south-west.
The goal is to get to "point Golf", located near the north tip of the Philippines at the same time. :wiggle:

The tankers need to make a fairly wide turn so they line up at the same speed and roughly 1,000 feet above the bombers, then fly in formation for about half an hour. The timing is VERY tricky, something on the order of +/- 15 seconds after some long over-water flights. :geek:

I've never tried this, the screen shot has a lot more to do with playing around with layers and filters in Paint Shop Pro.
