FlightSim Developers upcoming new release - Name That Plane

Wooo HOOOOOO!!!!!! :jump::jump::jump:

The TV series would be the classic "Sky King" and he flew two aircraft but the star of the show was his Cessna 310 Songbird!

Oh yeah, baby, smack me purple and call me happy!!! :icon_lol:

Ken

A remarkable assortment of guesses in the reply forms and some folks got it right, and even some who got it wrong got it right as well , maybe they would also like to take a shot at this question , who is the SOH member who flies a 310 and sent in a whole bunch of jpg's of every square inch of the aircraft, he earned a repaint for that at least!

310.jpg

And who says naked begging doesn't sometimes work! :icon_lol:

And that is one very beautiful looking virtual rendition of the C-310R! I am absolutely thrilled folks and very humbly appreciative that N5077J can join the stable of liveries! Very kind of you all!

Cheers,

Ken

Actually, both the T-50 and the c-310 were named Songbird. For some reason unknown, when they switched planes they didnt add a 1 behind the name..

::chuckles:; was my favorite show at the time.. Sky King, Roy Rogers and Flash Gordon pretty much made up my saturday mornings..

i was SLOOOWWWW.. darn near posted the answer in the thread till i took your clue. oy vay.. yup, sometimes i can be a dummy.. At least i gave it my best..

I posted Cessna 310 before I edited my earlier post:mixedsmi:

::chuckles:: i almost posted the entire history of the "Songbird" from its roots as a T-50 with radials to its transition mid show to the 310 and even gave the identity of the pilot who flew it ( kinda identity ). Cessna was using Sky king as a marketing platform, so the pilot was no less than a cessna exec. besides, there was only one other show that commonly had aircraft on it in the 50s and 60s and that was 12 O'Clock high, which starred a b-17 named Leper Colony ..

Well, specifically, the Songbird is a C-310B, and quite a bit different than the 310R or Q. That model has gone through more nose jobs than most movie stars.. in one version it has a schnoz on it that rivaled jimmy Durante's.

That's true. The hose nose is the 310R. Officially, the 310 doesn't have a nickname -- like Skyhawk or Skylark or Stationair. In fact, the only consistent aspect of the 310 lineage is the inconsistency! :icon_lol:

So Songbird is the one normally associated with the model, but you are right, the 310 has undergone a number of significant exterior modifications over its long lifetime. It's the one most folks use and I guess it's legit in the sense that the Skyhawk in the C-172A variant underwent a significant series of modifications itself but is still called a Skyhawk. The interesting thing is that if you use the term, Skyhawk, most folks know what you are talking about. If you use the term Songbird, most folks have little idea you're talking about a Cessna aircraft!

I have a lithograph from one of my former USAF squadrons. It features all of the aircraft the squadron has flown. One was the U-3A, nicknamed the "Blue Canoe." The U-3A was the off-the-shelf military of the C-310A. It was originally purchased as the L-27A, but that Air Force designation was soon changed to U-3A. Like I said, consistent inconsistency! That squadron is now the 357 Airlift Squadron flying C-130H2's. It's kind of ironic and quaint that I now fly an updated R version of that aircraft! I mean how many can say they fly an upgraded version of an aircraft once flown by one of their former military squadrons! Here is a photo of a U-3A off Airliners.net:

The one in the photo looks just like the one in my lithograph except for the livery and the serial number of the one in my litho is 0-82-120 vice the one in the photo 0-82-107. The C-310R is sort of considered the last of the 310 line. However, even that fact is questionable since Cessna originally released the C-320 Skynight as the C-310S! In terms of the 310 being the Songbird, I'm thinking since Cessna had such a close relationship with the TV program Sky King, and that was the name of his bird, I guess Cessna recognized a good thing when they had it and simply adopted the name initially.

So, she shall be Songbird, and long may she live! :engel016:

Cheers,

Ken

Found some other lovely photos of the U-3A in USAF livery!

This one is serial number 0-82-124, which is only four examples after the one in my litho!

beautiful plane. That one and the Piper Apache will always remain as favorites to me.. The folks back then may not have had the sophistication they do now, but heh.. they had style :D

There's a couple of 310's out for the sim. I think it's Flt1/Dreamfleet has one out for FS9 that works in FSX/SP1 and Brett Henderson and another fellow has one out for FSX/SP2.

I really appreciate the way FSD is capable of making quality models in a variety of different genres...warbirds, modern military, or GA. Most other developers are far more specialized (not that there's anything wrong it that).

Where was these photo's? I myself flew out in a Cessna 172 to a local GA airport and took about 1GB of photo's of a Cessna 310R I found to help with the modeling. I love doin "research" research. :salute:

I gotta say, the 310 is some of my best work yet, almost (but not quite) rivaling the P-38! Glad to see it flying!

technically fsd doesnt make then, milvis does, which (unless they've changed their ways) sell the models onto anybody who wants em.
