Flying Legends 2014

Bomber_12th

SOH-CM-2025
The annual Flying Legends air show, held at Duxford, UK, is less than a month away now, and for those interested an updated aircraft participation list has been provided at the Fighter Collection website, here:
http://fighter-collection.com/cft/flying-legends-2014/

Of special note:

- This air show will mark the debut of Zephyr Aviation's P-51D in brand new RAF 112 sqd. markings. This aircraft, now based in Britain, is the former Scandinavian Historic Flight "Old Crow" (N167F). It will look something like this:

- All four of the world's airworthy Spitfire Mk.I's will be in attendance and flying together. These are N3200, P9374, X4650, and AR213 (painted as P7308).

- The Kennet Aviation Seafire will be marking its much anticipated return to the air show circuit. The aircraft was very active up until a belly-landing incident at a show in France back in 2011, and has been under rebuild over the past few years. http://www.military-airshows.co.uk/shuttlejun06/img_6343.jpg

- The Fighter Collection's recently arrived highly polished P-40C Tomahawk will likely be one of the main stars of the show. This aircraft was completed 2 years ago by Matt Nightingale's shop at Chino, CA, and had been under the care of the Planes of Fame Air Museum at Chino up until this spring, when the aircraft was finally shipped to Duxford (following the sale of TFC's P-40B late last year). Many photos were taken of the aircraft when it was a participant at last years Planes of Fame air show, and the year before that. http://www.warbird-photos.com/airtoair/2013-05-01/PlanesofFame-A2A-20130501_P-40C_Warhawk_0590.jpg

- It's also great to see that both of the Gloster Gladiators (TFC and Shuttleworth) will be flying together at the show again, as well as the Red Bull/Flying Bulls fleet, consisting of their P-38, F4U-4, and B-25. The French-based P-51D "Moonbeam McSwine" will be making a return to Legends this year (which used to be based here, and very popular, in the U.S.), as will the French-based Hurricane (which used to be based at Wanaka, New Zealand).

Recived my ticket last week and looking forward to the event, i normally go to the RIAT at RAF Fairford this time of year but i have'nt been to a legends for five or so years, and as there's no October display at Duxford anymore, i figured i'd try Legends for a change, hopefully i'll get some pics to share.
cheers ian

Now that would be a great sight to see at the show, even if only static for this year! Once it is flying, whenever that may be, I hope that we might be treated to the additional sight/display of seeing it flying together with a couple of the Spitfire Mk.I's, like N3200 and P9374, as well, and/or one or two of the Mk.1 Hurricanes that are based in the UK and France.

It sounds like this will be the last Legends for the TFC Hellcat, before it ships to the U.S. later this year.

P-26 Peashooter for Flying Legends

A just-announced surprise addition to this years Flying Legends air show...one of my absolute favorite aircraft, the Planes of Fame Air Museum's incredibly rare P-26 Peashooter! http://fighter-collection.com/cft/surprise/

I also neglected to mention in my first post, that another unique visitor for this years show will be the Super Constellation! As long as the weather is nice, this is bound to be a Legends for the record book!

Further good news is that the Seafire was test flown this past Wednesday at North Weald where she is based, and later made a couple passes over Duxford. She'll be at Legends as planned! The assembly of the TFC's very shiny P-40C (having been delivered from Chino a few weeks back) should also be very close to completion, and will be test flown from Duxford early next week ahead of the air show.

Here are some teaser shots from the Bournemouth Airport Facebook page of P-51D G-SHWN (former N167F) sporting its new RAF 112 sqd. markings. This aircraft will be debuting its new colors at this years Flying Legends show. It will be complete with sharks mouth. I'm glad to see that they have gone with the correct color tones and flat paint. ; )

She looks gorgeous John, that is a very evocative scheme. Mind you, if they really wanted to hide those codes they should have used thicker brown paper!! :biggrin-new:

I was thinking the same, Andy. ; )

This is the type of paint scheme that can easily either be done accurately and be evocatively stunning, or be done over the top garish/gaudy and be absolutely awful to look at - I'm glad they went with accuracy. She shall be a stunner with the Duxford backdrop and surrounding scenery. Also, I look forward to the first John Dibbs photoshoot with the aircraft, which I have to believe is inevitable, if not already planned.

Also, for as long as the aircraft has been flying as a restored warbird (in Europe for a great many years as "Old Crow" and "Detroit Miss", amongst a few other identities), the aircraft never had gun ports. Besides the new paint scheme, the aircraft finally has gun ports once gain, complete with replica guns. The white area on the left landing gear door is a purposeful left-over of paint from its prior "Old Crow" markings, as within this area is a signature by Bud Anderson, where he signed the aircraft after the time in which he flew the aircraft over his old airbase at Leiston in 2001: http://www.cebudanderson.com/duxford.htm

Less than a week to go - wish I could be there!

Enjoy the show, everyone who gets to attend! I just wish I could, but I'll be travelling that weekend. Some year... :jump:

I guess the weather prevented a lot from happening most of the day today (this being the arrivals and practice day), but after the weather cleared, a lot started happening late in the day, including the arrival of the Connie and others. The TFC P-40C and visting POF P-26 Peashooter made their first test flights following assembly ahead of the show (in the hands of Steve Hinton), and one of the Mk.1 Spitfires, the TFC Gladiator, the TFC Hawk 75, and the TFC Corsair made some practice displays this evening. Even the BoB movie painted Buchon, which had an engine failure in-flight resulting in a perfectly executed dead-stick landing not even three weeks ago, took to the air this evening on a test flight and practice display following the installation of a new Merlin.

Some photos (and now video) from this evenings activity at Duxford, here: http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?128152-Duxford-Diary-2014/page45

Im going tomorrow, weather looks ok although im expecting to get a little wet, actually, some clouds are good for photos as long as there's enough light, In hot weather, the sun travel's east to west along the runway in front of the crowd line and Duxford can feel like a frying-pan. Im glad the Connie made it, saw her at Fairford a few years back as static but would love to see her fly.
cheers ian

Ive just got back from Flying Ledgends and i totally enjoyed it, It look'd like the airshow gods were out to get FL, bad weather at the end of last week stopped a number of guests making it across the channel, no Red Bull P38 or the 2 JU52's which i was really looking forward too, but the bad luck didnt stop there, the P26 had to cancel due to bad crosswinds and the P40C went tech, the real bummer was G-SHWN, which could'nt appear due to issues with paperwork apparently.
But all was not lost, i still had a really enjoyable show ( i did get wet ), the Connie was magnificent, as was a 4 ship formation routine of Mk1 Spits, and much more, i'll sort out some pics, maybe tonite although ive been awake 24 hours and my bed is calling.
cheers ian

Edit, pics added----
