For you old Chief Petty Officers: this will make you cringe....

Yesterday, I did some searching on the net to see just how many CPO clubs were still active, and found this:

There apparently was an event at Hampton Roads, VA to mark the 117th birthday of the founding of the Chief Petty Officer rank. Events such as: ....tricycle races, ...a contest to see who knew the most state capitals, ...a race to see who could carry a golf ball on a spoon the farthest while wearing swim fins and diving mask, and my personal favorite: ...who could jump the farthest in a potato sack.

My, how times have changed. Seriously, this makes me ashamed to be called a CPO. This is pitiful.

I am SO, SO glad to have joined the CPO ranks when I did. This "new" Navy? Well, you old salts decide for yourselves.....

NC, why does it make you ashamed to be called a CPO? I'm probably as old-school as any other retired Chief here, and I don't see anything wrong with some all-in-fun field events to celebrate CPO birthday. There aren't too many other options for celebrating anymore. OK, if not silly sports, how about a nice dining-in with mess dress or coat and tie? Where do you hold it??? If you got the numbers you were looking for in your search for CPO Clubs, you've found out there aren't too many left. Political correctness has made it darn near a mortal sin to get together off-duty where there's the slightest possibility somebody might order a beer. Also, you may not have noticed this yet but everybody gets to wear some variation of khaki these days. Khaki shirts and blue trousers - I can't tell who's a sailor and who's a marine. The sharp distinction between junior enlisted and CPO's is disappearing. I not only blame the Navy chain of command, but I blame the present CPO community for not having the cojones to stand up for their traditions and that includes CPO Clubs. But there's nothing anybody can ever do that would make me ashamed to be called a Chief Petty Officer.

Well, I must admit my choice of words was perhaps too strong about that. I am not ashamed to be a CPO, for certain.

But I definitely agree with your comments, especially about the political correctness being a problem. It is, I think, ruining this country.

I made Chief in 89 and it was the proudest moment of my life. I retired in 97 and the CPO Mess was already becoming politically correct with too many Chiefs becoming yes men for whatever foolishness was coming down the chain. I agree with Tarps about the blurring between junior enlisted and Chiefs. I see it every month when I make my monthly trip to Millington. We had to earn our khakis, now they come in a recruit's seabag.

Maybe I am just an old dinosaur, but it sure bothers me to see tradition kicked to the curb.

Where's the "Best Rear Admiral impersonation" or the "Most Admiral's daughters shagged" contest? :d

Sigh. Retired in June 1984, the best and worst day of my life. At that time the CPO was becoming a thing of the past. Time changes everything - good and or bad. Let us never forget how great it was to become a CHIEF. The Chief solves problems and is never one. When a problem needs to be solved; ask the CHIEF! But never ask how he gets it done (smile).
