FR DH114 Heron Now Available

One other thing you will notice is to do with the passenger doors. This is a quirk with FSX in general. If you are parked near a fuel point or you have a fuel tanker near the aircraft the doors will open but then snap shut almost instantly. I first noticed this when beta testing the Heron but then tried various other aircraft and had the same problem.

Also Mike that gaugesound.dll may have been my problem also as I started testing with a new install and hadn't noticed that file was missing.

very interesting aircraft, well done Mike, been waiting for her...
Thank you

Does anyone know what the range of the Heron is please. I was not able to find anything in the documentation provided. I know it will be shorter with the fixed gear version because of the drag.

The quoted range of the Heron was 795 nautical miles. I assume this is with full auxiliary tanks. One problem operators had with the Heron, due to being underpowered, was that winds would often play havoc with range. Already a fairly slow aircraft, a good headwind could make things frustrating. This was one of the reasons the New Zealand operators weren't that happy with the Heron, as their routes often took the aircraft through areas known for high winds.

I couldn't find anything relating to range for the fixed-gear aircraft. I did read on one of the PPRune forums somewhere that in the end, there wasn't an extraordinary difference between fixed and retractactable, although there must have been something! I made the assumption for the airfiles that the difference in airspeed would be approx. 10 knots, judging by how much airspeed the retractable loses when the gear comes down coupled to the fact that the fixed gear had streamlined fairings. So, say about 700 nautical miles?

Thanks for that Mike. Was just curious as a couple of flights in Australia can get a bit long in the outback of Central Australia.

That's a nice juxtaposition there, dc.

Exactly shows the feeling i can't help having about the fixed gear version: that there's something wrong with it and now a sister ship is leading it in to aid a safe landing....

A fixed gear looks perfectly normal on its predecessor, the Dragon Rapide, but looks very weird to me on a 'modern' regional airliner that had its first flight in the 1950's.

Always been a big fan of the Dove, not only because it looks lovely but also because i had my first ever flight in it ( scenic flight with Martin's Air Charter in 1958, never to forget.. :) and it was the first ever digital model i created for FS. Later on i saw it many times at air display shows carrying the crew for the Battle of Britain flight. She always performed a little display herself too.

AFAIK the Dove never had a fixed gear so that's why it looks so strange to me on the Heron. In fact i never knew about it until now... Never too old to learn.. :teapot:

cheers,
jan

I did not get the Dove treatment :untroubled:, me it was an ex RNZAF Devon and off all things, I was simply a bag of spuds to help out during a twin engine rating, couple of hours over Christchurch, back then Wigram was still an airfield and out across to West Melton airfield approx 15km due west .. plopped in there running out off runway, taking on fuel then off and away again . :encouragement:

My only wish - the prop discs a little darker. Otherwise a brilliant addition to my hanger.

Mike, on your research to this aircraft, did you saw this paint somewhere?
PP-SLFTAS.jpg
This was a brazilian carrier (Don´t exist anymore) called: TAS - Transportes Aéreos Salvador
As i only was able to find this b&w picture i wonder if you have more information on this plane (The colors, markings, etc). I´m very interested in this plane with this colors.

Ps: I will get this bird day 1th of next month when my bank account gets better .... :encouragement:

Thanks!

No, sorry, nothing to add! The Heron was used by a vaste number of airlines (e.g. was ANA of Japan's first aircraft), but sometimes there is only one or two photos available on the web (like Air India). Pluna of Ecuador was another I'd liked to have done, of the South American operators, but there isn't enough clear info....

One way I've discovered of finding photos is not to put the aircraft type in the search box, but rather the airports and dates the aircraft were operating there. Interesting what turns up sometimes!

A search does indicate the following, but it's not much, as you probably already know:

Heron Serial no.14003

The aircraft was 'withdrawn from use' in Miami, in May 1970, and so at least had a long career.

The aircraft was registered as PP-SLF, PT-AVA, and, supposedly PP-STS (however, photos on the web show STS as a later retractable-gear Heron, so don't know what happened there!)
