Free Microsoft Anti-Virus?

Having read the threads it does seem a bit too good
to be true.

I had a look at the licence agreement (probably the first
one i've ever read).

It gives Microsoft all sorts of rights over adding, removing and disabling software (and not only viruses and malware).

You might think this is fair enough if all your software
is legit (as is mine), but based on past experiences
with Microsoft products, I wouldn't be at all surprised if
FSX were to be suddenly disabled as 'non genuine'.

Just saying -do you really want to hand over control
of your computer to Microsoft?

(P.S. on the bright side, you can claim up to $5 damages if you win a case under the licence agreement).

The thing with saying MS is so evil and all is that if they wanted to they could do anything to your computer they ever wanted and you'd never know since they already have access to your OS and with it the rest of the computer through these system updates. And denying access to programs by an antivirus program is something that could happen with any antivirus program. The license agreement for any antivirus software has that same liability protection as MS has.

Well, I'll try it tomorrow, I use, and am happy with AVG and not noted it as CPU hungry, none the less I'll give this one a try and see how it goes, same for the SWMBO's PC which is older and slower, this might help there a bit.

Try creating a notepad file called nsrbgxod.bak after you have deleted it all and save that file in the same spot where the virus tries to create it. Hopefully when the virus tries to reinstall itself to that file, Windows will not allow it to do so since it wont let it create a new file with the same name.

That was a great idea! And it worked too - the "other" version of that file did not return after making my own copy. But that wasn't the source of the problem, evidently. I still had rouge rundll32.dll files popping up on my desk top, and I still couldn't run the malicious file remover, or the MS Essentials anti-virus application being discussed here. All this after "fixing" the MBR and getting two clean sweeps of the virus scanners that were on the windows boot CD. In the end, after three days of this, I decided on the "nuclear option" and wiped the drive clean. I think I will try Windows 7 on my "new" computer...
