Freeware Texture Roulette

Nice as they are, my GE Pro, Flight Environment and other payware textures can get a little familiar after a while.
So I thought I'd do an FS9 install, tossing in freeware textures to improve the look of earth, water sky and clouds.
A little of this, a little of that...

Point is, FS9 can be made to look exceptional, and it does not take too much trouble to do!

I totally agree.....you don't have to spend big money for all the addon stuff to make FS9 look great. Out of the box...it's so-so. Add in some of the great freeware mesh that is out there (I use the mesh by Rhumbaflappy), the HDE Clouds package, Real Environment Pro (I only use it in my "stock" installs...the rest are Golden Wings and Silver Wings), TreeGen by Feng Zhu...and you have yourself an impressive looking sim without breaking the bank.

All looks breathtaking, I agree with you that FS9 can be made to look great, there's a LOT of FS9 freeware and payware stuff around, so FS9 will still be around for a long time yet.

Yes, and being used to how the whole thing hangs together, I was not timid in throwing in textures from this or that addon, in random flavours.
Combinations are endless.
There's even some Howard's Mix in there...

While my screenshots are not as spectacular as Wing Z's, I thougth I toss in a few of mine to show what freeware can do to FS9. Mesh is by Rhumbaflappy, clouds and sky are from the HDE Clouds package, textures are Golden Wings 3.

The world-wide mesh is LOD5 and LOD7. LOD 5 while you are out at a distance....still a vast improvement over the stock stuff...then the LOD 7 kicks in when you get closer. Then I have his LOD 8 mesh installed, which covers about a third of the planet....all of the Pacific and most of Europe and a good chunk of North Africa. From East of the Azores, to west of the Caspian Sea, from North well into the Artic, to south well into the Sahara desert.
