• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

Fresnel Ramp?

The fresnel texture is a texture that is applied to texture material setting. It's not a texture that is displayed. It controls the materials of the parts of a 3D model that have material properties assigned to the fresnel. Some of these properties include but are not limited to:

1. Transparancy.
2. Reflection.
3. Specularity.
4. A combination of the above to create a completely new effect.

The texture is a control that uses a color or monochromatic gradient to tell the graphics engine the angle at which you want the above items to be visible. There's no limit to how many you can use. most devs only use 1 or 2. But Carenado and A2A use MANY to achieve their exterior look. The fresnel needs to be combined with other model material settings in order to gain full potential from it. Many devs do not use it to the full potential in FSX/P3D, nor do they use the material settings in a way that would allow the most flexibility to the texture artists.

EDIT: In a PBR setting Fresnel is not used in the same way as the angles are calculated by the GFX engine in real time. Fresnels can also be used in the 3D modeling program to chieve the same look directly with the model material without applying a texture. But that's beyond my knowledge.
