FS2002 Scenery Question

stoney

SOH-CM-2023
I recently did a clean install of my FS2002, after uninstalling it. But funny thing, now the airfield won't change when I select a new field. Same with the aircraft. I can choose a different plane but it always comes back to the original one. Plus, on start up it will say there was an error due to many missing items in the SCENERY.CFG (addon scenery). All stated items were in the previous install, but not in the new one. I had no new airfields other than the default ones. I made sure to delete the old FS2002 folder from the Microsoft Games folder before my clean install. As my Addon scenery is empty at this point, What could cause this to happen.

If anyone could help I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks

Stoney,
Not sure about the airfield and aircraft selection problem - I will assume that you do recall that FS2002 will always open with the default airfield and aircraft unless you save a new flight as the default, right? As for the missing scenery items, go in the FS2002 main folder and open the scenery.cfg file with Notepad. If the scenery.cfg file contains line entries for scenery packages that you have not yet added to your new install, the old scenery.cfg file has somehow been retained in the new install. The default scenery.cfg file is in the FS2002.cab file on install disk #1, copy it into your new install (overwriting the old one) and hopefully that should resolve the scenery errors.

Okay, Thanks TARPSbird. I'll give that a try. I'm mostly a CFS2 guy, but like to fly bush planes in the rough sometimes. Funny thing, the default flight shows up (C172 at Meigs field Chicago) but when you select go fly, it ALLWAYS goes to a field in Alaska and a Piper Apache, no matter what you select. I've re-installed twice, deleted everything and still the same thing happens. I'm beginning to think it might have something to do with the VISTA system that came with my new box!

Stoney,
Your flight selection problem is very strange. You say that even though the default screen shows the C172 at Meigs, when you click Fly Now you get a Piper Apache at a field in Alaska. Hmmmm... I don't have FS2002 on my computer any more but I'm pretty sure the Apache is not a MS default plane. Have you added the Apache to the sim since re-installing? If so maybe it came with an Alaska flight which has somehow made itself the default flight. I would suggest creating a new default flight. Start up FS2002, go to the airport of your choice, select an aircraft, set time of day, then save it as the default flight. You don't have to start the engine or take off, just save it. Then completely exit FS2002. Then start FS2002 again and see if (a) your default flight selection comes up, and (b) it still shows when you click Fly Now. If I'm missing something simple maybe somebody else can put their two cents in.

Yep, No joy on that either TARPSbird. No matter what I select in Create a Flight it will only load the Apache in AK. Both are add on. Though once I get to that field, I can then change both the aircraft and the field fine by using the Alt key and changing them. I can live with that for a while, as I have FS2004 on the way from Amazon. WEIRD. Thanks for trying

I am no expert in FS8 but it sounds like the problem is a left over file from the old install.

If FS8 does things like FS9 then there is a scenery.cfg file in the same place that the FS9.cfg file would be stored.

The path should be

On XP C:\Documents and settings\{user name}\AppData\Microsoft\FS9 (FS8 most likely for you)

On Vista C:\Users\DD26_X\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FS9 (FS8 most likely for you)

Look at the scenery.cfg file in the same folder that. Open it with note pad and see if the old entries are in it.

Now if the old data is in this file I would suggest a new clean install.

Uninstall all of FS8.

Go to the path FS8 has just been uninstalled from and delete all the left over files. In FS9 it would be C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FS9 (again should be FS8 for you)

Then go to the folder we found the old info for FS8 above and delete the FS8 folder

Now all the old data should be gone.

Do a reboot

Do a defrag

Then do a reinstall.

Dangerousdave, good call. I forgot all about those other .cfg files that reside outside the main FS2002/2004 folders. :)
