Fs2004 only Fokker Dr1

even Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richtofen said that it was a pain to fly, and the early ones had snapping issues so he continued to use his previous aircraft until it was fixed, then he used the DR.I... he described is as once mastered "It Manouvres like the Devil and climbs like a monkey"

rest assured she'll find a loving place in my hangar, put about 20 hours in the last 5 days in theprevious version so really can't wait for this.... but i will! :salute::icon_lol:
 
I read a whole book of interviews, engineering and testing notes from way back then and it was fasinating that they even followed through with the Dr1.
3 test pilots were killed when the top wing blew off, then one guy almost died when the rear tail section broke off... I cant figger how he landed, or did he just survive the the crash? They never did get it to be stable in a loop, infact it couldnt really do a loop. And it had strut problems and stability problems, it was just a horrible night mare for sure. But if the pilot could learn to work with it he was pretty invincible in it. It didnt have a carberator so it was a grivitational feed fuel system so if you dove to fast it would sputter or flame out and it would rev wierdly if you climbed to fast. Man... Out side of the flight simulator I would never touch the thing with a 10 foot pole.

It was a pain to write the air file for it, but I did the best I could with the data. It flies like a pain in the rump.. but then that was the goal.

Everything I've read about fighters says the more unstable the aircraft is the better a dogfighter it will be. Based on that theory it sounds like this thing was nearly invincible!

a lot of the great WWI pilots for the Axis flew DRI's..... von Richtofen (Manfred and Lothar, Lothar got 33 confirmed in 2 months in the thing!), Werner Voss, Josef Jacobs, Walter Göttsch, Ernst Udet, Wilhelm Schwarz & Hans Joachim Wolff to name but a few...

Jasta 11 being the kings of the sky in the great war (in my opinion)...

From what I've read, these things had the abillty to yaw dramatically and still maintain a degree of stability. The tactic was to laterally straf your opponent as he flew past you. The lower speed/ higher manouverabily qualities of the Dr.I make me think of the IJN aircraft encountered by the US Forces in 1942. My choice would be a SPAD 13, a tactic called Boom & Zoom, and a wingman named Thatch. Sorry Baron, I'm not even going to try to turn with that little red plane. (20X20 hindsight....)

Apparently the Dr.I was created after encounters with Sopwith's new Triplane. I wonder if those two designs ever met up in the air, and what sort of spastic manouvres that would have created......(Back away boys, back away...let them have at it on their own....

yeah a turning dogfight with a DR.I on your six you'd regret, but this was an era when dogfighting was as gentlemanly pursuit as their was during the war, even the red baron himself went for the plane, not the pilot... unlike his brother Lothar who he describes as reckless....

back on track the thing did have good lateral stability allowing the 'strafe' tactic, that is also how it could turn so tight and get out of 'dodge' so often.... it just out manouvred pretty much everything and out-climbed pretty much everything...
 
I always thought that the Germans really knew how to build an airplane. The did an excellent job with their ships too...

Having seen the new cockpit in the videos of Tom's renewed Dr.I..... I'm looking forward big time to re-aquainting myself with this old friend. What about the texture mapping, has it been changed in the rebuild, or will any of the old third-party paints still work?
 
When it came to machinery and just plain design and engineering you cant beat a German Engineering firm. The problem was in the fact that they over built things so much that the darn things were hard to fix on the battle field and making new ones took 5 times longer then the allies.
There is a joke My grandfather used to say all the time (He was German) "One german soldier went out to the battle field when he came back he said to his commander,"Great news! I just blew up 50 American tanks!" His commander just handed him more explosives and said " Great, but they just showed up a 150 more this morning .....)

lol. That was just about the way it was...lol. Even to this day you just cannot beat the allies in manufaturing, they lose one plane and come back with 20 more to replace it the next day, thats just how it is.

Oh by the way the Dr1 is released.

Dad went up against these men from June of 1944 til the war's end. To the end of his life he never lost his respect for their qualities as soldiers or as engineers. As an artillery section chief on 155mm Long Toms, he was priviliged to command probably the finest medium artillery piece of WWII; nonetheless he forever retained a healthy respect for the fabled 88mm, having been under fire from that weapon more than once. He mentioned almost the same thing you did re: the tanks; he maintained it was production, not superior American fighting qualities, that defeated the Wehrmacht. He allowed one exception to that statement - his boss, G. S. Patton.

Make that three! I was also born on May 2, love red planes, and the DR.1 has long been a favorite of mine. Oh yeah, when playing "dogfight" in the playground as a kid, I was always the Red Baron, lol.

The liveries on it are faded and blotched from age. Thats what I went for. I was flying around in it with it last night and dog fighting some friends in it with the new combat gun modds from Captain sim...all i got was dirt in my face as I was shot down so much...lol:icon_lol: So I figgered I would switch to my new spad (Spad coming out too) and the same thing, so its operator un-prowness I guess..:) Those guys were turning inside my tightest turn with it and nailing me over and over.... sigh...I guess I should fly some more between designing...:icon_lol:

It was fun seeing them have so much fun killing each other in it. Im happy to see it-Dr1- has new life again in fs2004.

Hi All, I Know they are not genuine original WW1 machines,but very accurate replicas - here ( NZ) there are eight flyable.They appear at airshows like Warbirds over Wanaka ,and at Omaka and their home 'drome Hood.I think they are largely owned by Peter Jackson(Lord of the Rings).I am trying to attach one of my pix from this years show in April- All 8 were up,but I've only got seven close enough to be worthwhile.One part of the show there were the 8 DR1's,a Camel,Bristol F2b,SE 5,Albatros DV,Fokker DV11,Nieuport 11,and a Sopwith Triplane dogfighting above 2 MK1V tanks,fieldguns and infantry - a real blast of a show! My pix are all 3-4Mb size,and I'd have to find a good way of reducing size while retaining quality, but if there's any interest I can give it a go and post some.
