FSDS2 Jet Provost T5 Question

This may have been discussed ages ago and everyone has moved on. . .but me being me. . . .I probably missed it somewhere along the way. In the texture folders there is a texture called "norm". That texture appears to hold many of the interior/VC textures. However none of them show in the VC. Anyone who uses DXTbmp also knows that when a texture is transferred to a graphics program for touch-up or corrections it is renamed "norm". Is this a case of a texture wrongly named that should be used in the sim and the model doesn't see it? Another possibility is that it's a texture that doesn't even belong to this airplane. Just wondering.

Yes, "norm.bmp" is the correct name for the texture. Not sure why it's not showing for you though.

Bits and pieces from the norm.bmp texture are used for the lower panel and sides. The upper part of the panel is fed with bitmaps which are located in the panel folder.
RD: It is Rick Piper's Jet Provost, not sure if it is still available somewhere on the web...

oooook. Too bad I don't have the expertise to redo the texture sheets for the VC and get things consolidated and in more detail. Kinda falls short in that area. I'm redoing what textures I can find to higher res to make things look a bit more uniform. Thanks "hschuit".

My Jet Provost, inside and out. Still some changes to be made to areas that most would never even notice (side panels, flooring, Ejection Seat and the like), but it's far enough along to fly a few hops on the SOH Server.

That's breathed new life into the old girl Ed:encouragement: Hope you'll share the sharper VC textures;)

Still tinkering a bit. . .but soon. I'm really amazed by how "scattered" the textures are once you get past the three main panel textures. Very random in their usage and poorly conceived really. One 2048x2048 sheet with the remaining textures would have sufficed, would have allowed for better resolution and ease of texturing. As an example, the landing gear buttons on the L/H VC Panel are duplicated again on the two throttle quadrants (why, I'm not sure as they aren't used for anything other than looks) and the art for those doesn't come from that L/H texture, they come from two different vcpanel textures. . .one for the buttons and one for the labels. The additional vcpanel textures, as far as I can tell aren't used at all other than that one postage stamp sized panel for the landing gear buttons. Even the Ejection Seat textures could have been applied to that one large texture basically eliminating 4 texture sheets.

Don't forget this model was originally made 11 years ago. 2048x2048 texture sheets were unheard of back then.
Nice work though, looks really sharp.:encouragement:

This looks awesome, Ed!!!

This is the perfect RAF trainer for the period of simming I'm most keen on, and in the absence of Gnat, it truly is a keeper. With your mods, better still!

It shows its age most around the canopy screen shape, but past that, the level of detail around landing gear, lights, aerials, and such makes it a real joy to fly, you'd hardly know it's as old as it is.

Thanks for this update, Ed.

Hey Dave!

Yes, I've tried that one, I'll look at it again, I think it didn't look that great in FSX, can't recall why I didn't keep it. Maybe running the Fixer on it might help. Thanks for the reminder.

That's no slight to simShed - I fly their Wessex and Nimrod happily, the latter especially, is at/close to payware grade.

Indeed.. and I still have a v1 beta knocking around that will out-run Rick's Meteor:biggrin-new: The model almost never saw the light of day due to an error Rick unwittingly introduced himself. It was only on the insistence of me and the other chap doing the testing (an ex-RAF pilot now sadly gone) that it came back out of the bin and Rick finally found what he'd done to make it self-destruct!! His one major regret was that he didn't make it 32-sided (this shows its age!!). Had it been payware.. it would have made him a nice few bob;)

Last time I tried the Gnat, I didn't have much success with it. Can't remember why off the top of my head but it didn't stay active for long. Damned shame as it was a great model for FS9 as are all Brian's models.

Hi Falcon,

I had clean forgotten about this little gem. PLEASE share what you have when you are ready. Did you do this texture (8 FTS). I don't think that I've seen it previously.

Bill

The changes are currently being uploaded to the SOH downloads area. They should be available tomorrow sometime.

I only redid the two original liveries:
