FSX Grumman Goose HD Redux V1.2 ..... Revisited

MZee1960

SOH-CM-2023
Believe it or not, I never flew the FSX default Goose much, mainly because of the many quirks it had.
Once I was hooked on Milton's AI Bounty and Victory models, in a desperate attempt to find a suitable AC to follow them, .... I decided to give it another shot.

I downloaded the totally all inclusive, latest, and very much improved version -the "OZx Goose HD Redux" from here :
https://www.lockonfiles.com/files/file/1312-fsx-grumman-goose-hd-redux-v12/

This version simply installs over the default FSX Goose and changes a lot of folders in the process, all for the better. Remember to do a backup of the original FSX Goose beforehand. You will still have the original repaints, plus several 'new' HD repaints as well, along with two engine versions for the choosing.

Repaints in HD are not that common, unfortunately. The SOH library has several beauties by Jankees, @trucker17 .. ; Avsim also has several by George Arana, Jankees and others. Be sure to look for the HD Redux version if want detailed skins.

VC lighting is a bit 'dark' for my taste (YMMV), ... so I added another light entry to the aircraft.config :

[LIGHTS]
//Types: 1=beacon, 2=strobe, 3=navigation, 4=cockpit, 5=landing
light.5 = 1, -16.3, -0.26, 4.5, fx_beacon ,
light.7 = 4, 1.60, 0.00, 2.70, fx_vclight,
light.8 = 4, -1.485, -1.33, 3.02, fx_vclight
//light.9 = 4, -1.485, 1.43, 3.02, fx_vclight

Steering (land/water) can be manipulated by changing these two entries :

[contact_points]
//0 Class (1=wheel and 5=a 'fake' water rudder)
//1 Longitudinal Position (feet)
//2 Lateral Position (feet)
//3 Vertical Position (feet)
//4 Impact Damage Threshold (Feet Per Minute)
//5 Brake Map (0=None, 1=Left, 2=Right)
//6 Wheel Radius (feet)
//7 Steer Angle (degrees)
//8 Static Compression (feet) (0 if rigid)
//9 Max/Static Compression Ratio
//10 Damping Ratio (0=Undamped, 1=Critically Damped)
//11 Extension Time (seconds)
//12 Retraction Time (seconds)
//13 Sound Type
//14 Airspeed limit for retraction (KIAS)
//15 Airspeed that gear gets damage at (KIAS)

I am not one for window reflections in the VC. Prefer to see the scenery without shadows on glass.
To do this, I DL this handy set of files and chose the Goose one to replace in the config :
https://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/17818/fsx-remove-cockpit-reflections/

The Redux water spray and wake effects are beautiful when viewed from the outside, but intrude into the VC view.
To eliminate the water spray effect from being seen inside the VC, I went back to the default files, by making the following changes :

[EFFECTS]
wake= fx_wake
water= fx_spray
//wake=fx_wake_Goose_Redux
//water=fx_spray_Goose_Redux

startup=fx_engstart_Goose_Redux
dirt=fx_tchdrt
concrete=fx_sparks
touchdown=fx_tchdwn_s, 1

To add a GPS to the VC (besides the 2D pop-up panel), here's a handy mod by @Cirrus N210MS :
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php/98706-Grumman-Goose-HD-GPS-VC-Installed-zip

If aircraft keeps stalling when throttle at idle, make this change in aircraft config :

[GeneralEngineData]
engine_type = 0 //0=Piston, 1=Jet, 2=None, 3=Helo-Turbine, 4=Rocket, 5=Turboprop
Engine.0 = 3.589, -5.837, 4.41 //(feet) longitudinal, lateral, vertical distance from reference datum
Engine.1 = 3.589, 5.837, 4.41 //(feet) longitudinal, lateral, vertical distance from reference datum
fuel_flow_scalar= 1.0 //0.43 //Fuel flow scalar
min_throttle_limit = 0.10; //Minimum percent throttle. Generally negative for turbine reverser was = -0.25 originally

@greyeagle ......... In the other thread, you were asking about an 'Expansion pack' for the Goose ?

This V1.2 HD Redux has it, plus everything is up to date (..in other words - there are no newer versions that I am aware of).

I am hoping this thread will bring some additional mods, ideas, repaints and input from the wonderful people here at SOH to keep this beauty flying well into the future !

Very nice images, thanks for sharing.

The tongue-in-cheek side of my nature is perked up by the yellow goose (5W-GTA). I'm amazed how 24ST Alclad could "rust-up" like that.

I guess that's why Grumman was referred to as the "Iron works."

...I know, I know..........:mixed-smiley-010:

Currently looking for 'Mount Cook Airlines' and 'N39FG' HD repaints for the OZx Grumman Goose Redux v1.2 with the enhanced textures and bumps.
Anyone know of a place to DL these beauties from ? They used to be available from OZx.

Tires looking a bit 'flat' ?

When standing on tarmac, if the landing gear tires look a bit low on air to you, ... here's a fix :

Go to the aircraft config (for each of the two versions), and change to these numbers shown in red, after backing-up the original, of course -

[contact_points]
//0 Class
//1 Longitudinal Position (feet)
//2 Lateral Position (feet)
//3 Vertical Position (feet)
//4 Impact Damage Threshold (Feet Per Minute)
//5 Brake Map (0=None, 1=Left, 2=Right)
//6 Wheel Radius (feet)
//7 Steer Angle (degrees)
//8 Static Compression (feet) (0 if rigid)
//9 Max/Static Compression Ratio
//10 Damping Ratio (0=Undamped, 1=Critically Damped)
//11 Extension Time (seconds)
//12 Retraction Time (seconds)

//14 Airspeed limit for retraction (KIAS)
//15 Airspeed that gear gets damage at (KIAS)

This may have also eliminated (fixed) the strange 'water splashing effect' from the vicinity of the tailwheel region when aircraft is sitting still in the water, which I saw on random occasions in the external views.

I want to repaint this beautiful bird. Does any one still got the paintkit? Really sad that their website is still down.

It's actually the yellow paint that's rusting, part of the yellow tint is iron particles .... :topsy_turvy:

A few random shots in one of the early versions of P3D, which still work in the latest versions.
As mentioned even the some of the original 'HD' textures are a little below the present day level produced by our resident 'Aces'.

I personally also would love to have a copy of the 'Mt.Cook Airlines' repaint, please.

Hopefully it can be made available somehow. :dispirited:
