just to get it right. if I buy the steam edition from amazon I get a disc with code or will I have to buy that from steam . if I go to steam and download it will I be able to use fsx freeware/ payware that I have already . and can I access the files in the aircraft. now my head hurts lol
cheers greycap

You can buy FSX SE on Steam or Amazon. You will need to install Steam, then download thru Steam.
It is best to not have any trace of your original FSX installed. (Backup all your add-ons some where safe
away from where you are going to install Steam)
You do not need to install Steam on your "C" drive, it can be put on a separate drive or partition.
FSX SE will install into the root Steam folder under "Steamapps/Common" folder. All folders and files are
the same as the original.
I have not had any problems installing any add-on a/c or scenery with an auto-installer.

Yep, I haven't had ANY issues installing planes or scenery, and I've installed tons.

The OnlY thing to watch out for, if you purchase the A2A lights addon (if often comes bundled with the purchase), for DEFAULT aircraft only, FSX ignores the aircraft.cfg files in the Simobjects\Airplanes directory and instead uses the aircraft.cfg files from the

Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\DLC\379233\SimObjects\Airplanes\... directories instead.

For instance, if you like to swap out the paints for the Orbit etc airlines with real world airlines, add the new textures to the

Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\SimObjects\Airplanes\... directories, but edit the aircraft.cfg files in the directories in the path above.

Lost in FSX?

.. he sat down at his computer to play FSX and was never heard from again. Occasionally you'd see a more human looking pilot or hear faint cries.

My own personal preference

If my FSX Box didn't work any longer, I'd get another Gold edition with Acceleration in the box from eBay because I like having discs and registrations codes on the sticker, that's just me. Tons of guys use Steam FSX, Truck Sim etc. but I had some issue with STEAM.

I prefer "old school" cause I'm an old guy LOL!. I can uninstall and re-install it that way any time I want from the disks I own not somewhere online. If I couldn't do that then I would probably get LM P3DV3 which I am able to run on my system instead of STEAM even though that is a download. I don't need LM yet and don't have enough HP on my computer to run V4.

These are my thoughts along with the other guys all of us trying to help you make an intelligent decision.

thanks .
finances come into the equation . I will stick to fs9 as the tower view suits my needs as I like to aerobat warbirds and watch my self flying from tower view . I was happy to fly now and then in fsx , but the sounds are abysmal outside the cockpit and most big airports have the view stuck far too low .

A Good Program Choice

I always liked FS9 and used it long after many had switched to FSX. I even used it as an educational tool in Junior High when I taught and the students studied aerodynamics. I only switched to FSX because aircraft and scenery I wanted only worked in FSX. There are still some that don't work well in FSX that I miss. If it suits you then keep enjoying your investment. Wait for the future, things are always changing. I well understand budgetary constraints and flight sim.

I don't know if you're up for it, but ADE is great for adjusting the tower view height and location.

You can use it to just make a small file that you add to a scenery directory that has just the tower information. You could even make a set of scenery files, one for each airport, that you put in a single scenery called "Tower", and, as long as Tower is the first scenery in the list, it should use those values. I'm pretty sure that should work.

I've also seen a tower "airplane" around. I'll look for it. Pretty sure it's got a radar in it. There's also the ability to sit in the tower in FSX, with a full interface. It might be that was only available in multi-player, but I'm pretty sure somebody adapted it for offline play. It's been many years since I did that though. Again, I'll see what I can find if you're interested.
