Alas due to a motherboard issue (see below for those interested) a complete reinstall of WIN and thus FSXA is required. I have all the stuff and all the accumulated files for everything else, so no issues there. I guess I would be interested on your views on what not reinstall or what not to do vis a vis FSX. I would add this rider, a had to reinstall FSX recently for other reasons and inadvertently let it go where MS wanted it to, the Program Files/Games Folder and guess what? I ran better than it ever had before.

( A HP Quirk motherboard reads to test/error message of HD drive as having failed but the issue is a false flag on the motherboard - how to resolved - yep complete HD erasure, clean and reinstall O/S)

Since you have to go through a complete reinstall, it might be worth investigating about FSX Steam, before trying to install anything.
FSX Steam is not perfect, especially because NOT all addons work with it.
However, it is so much easier to install that it might save a lot of efforts.

If FSX Steam is not an option, then you can try to reinstall the normal FSX.
And in any case, the very first thing to do will be to ensure your Windows is fully up to date, for Windows Update, .NET frameworks, C++ runtimes, DirectX, etc.... Don't try to install the sim before your Windows is fully ready for it.
And despite your previous experience, DO NOT install it in the default path.

If you intend to investigate Steam as above but not totally committed then install the regular box version first. Installing Steam first takes up the folders in the AppData file that a regular FSX would like but installed second it finds its own way. Doing this will avoid potential problems when it comes to installing addons later.

I believe the other way is better.
If you install FSX Steam on a fresh computer where FSX never existed, then FSX Steam uses the same keys and folders as normal FSX, which eases up the install of some addons.
If you install FSX Steam on a computer where FSX was already existing, then FSX Steam uses different keys and folders, which makes it more difficult to install old addons.

I can say this from my experience today. I had FSX boxed on my desktop. Erased it, or tried to. Registry cleaner and all that. Installed FSX SE and it runs great but I have odd problems, like installing some Carenado aircraft. But it runs great.

So today I installed FSX SE on my laptop (admittedly is a gaming laptop, but, not new). Fresh install, never had FSX on it. Steam Edition looks great and runs flawlessly. Better then I expected.

Good times.

Thanks for the responses. I will leave steam and continue. At the moment MS WIN 7 is playing hide and seek with the FSX.cfg files and folders. So until that issue is resolved nothing else can be done.

You have to go into the folder options (via the menus -ALT key- of the explorer window) to disable the hidding of system and hidden files, as well as the hidding of the extensions of the file names with known types.
