With thanks to the holiday sales currently going, I finally got my hands on this beauty, which I've been eyeing for years. Looking forward to teaming it up with the FSAddon Gladiator for some formation work.

Dutch profiles Curtiss P-40E/N part 1, Huub..? :D

The 'Banteng Madjah' should be bigger I think, and overlap both the green and grey. See page 37 for a colour photo. ;)

Hi Ferry, thanks for the feed back. The pictures are actually still "work in progress".

Recently I finally found an affordable copy of the book "De geschiedenis van camouflage en kentekens op vliegtuigen van de Nederlandse strijdkrachten" by J.H.N. Greuter (Still far too expensive, but it THE standard). The book contains several pictures from this aircraft and a close up from the nose. Funny enough on one photograph the "Banteng Marah" image is completely in the olive drab area above, while on another photograph it is partly in the drab area and partly in the neutral grey area .
As I'm not yet satisfied with the bull's head, this is not the final version. I will make the next version a bit larger, but not as large as the profile in "Dutch profiles Curtiss P-40E/N part 1" as this doesn't match the pictures I have.

According the text in the book the aircraft were delivered in the original USAF factory scheme, but most of the most aircraft were painted olive drab with neutral grey afterwards (so the medium green disappeared). Mid 1944 the large Y was painted on the tail, first in white, but this was soon replaced by light grey (I will change the shape of the Y as well). I have a picture from this aircraft taken during the autumn of 1944 where nearly all the paint is already removed. The red spinner with white line remained, but the Y had disappeared again. As I haven't been able to find a clear picture from this aircraft which shows the complete aircraft in green livery, there is a lot of guessing.
Its the same with marking on top of the wings. Some aircraft had them others didn't. I assume the were there in the original livery, but not anymore after the aircraft were repainted.

Cheers,
Huub

PS it is "Banteng Marah" instead of "Banteng Madjah". "Banteng Marah" means angry bull in Malaysian.

Huub, the C3-500 is featured in several profiles in both volumes; The oldest one, dated september 1944, has the Buffalo on both the green and grey, medium green blotches painted over and no letter on the tail.
There are at least two colour photos of this version in the book.

By July 1945 the aircraft was almost completely stripped of it's paint (Guess it was cheaper to strip it than to repaint it..) , with a red band around the nose intake.

A third profile pictures the C3-500 at Biak in 1945 with a non-typical 'Y' on the tail in medium sea grey, no white bands in the spinner and now the medium green blotches have returned!

By 1947 the flags had white bands ("Probably in four positions", default was five with only a flag on the top of the left wing and two on the bottom) , the bull is now in the green part of the nose, and still no white bands on the spinner. The cockpit hood is now replaced with an older birdcage type! The medium green is gone again too....

But, one thing remains typical of the Dutch airforce in those days: No two aircraft are painted the same!

Maintainance of the appaerance of our P-40's wasn't that great, and many can be seen in various states between green and bare metal... Obviously they saw a lot of usage during a short period of time..

As for the name of the bull: Both books were written with the help of people who were actually there, but memories can fade over time I guess..
