FTX Global Iceland Demo

both versions look the same and have all the Global textures etc... the difference is that the Global version integrates with the Global control Panel for those who have it, the non-global version is a stand alone, anybody can use it scenery. you still get the textures.

Thank you! Most informative reply sir!:salute:

I've been quite pleased with how ORBX FTX did New Zealand (I have their South Island package; do most of my flying there). Being something of an armchair volcanologist I'll be very interested in how they render one of the most geologically active and dynamic regions on Earth. Looking forward to see how they visualize Surtsey, Vestmannaeyjar, and the Laki Fissure region.

Very cool!

I don't have the Global so I downloaded the "Off" version. I flew twice in it and removed it. The starting airports were goiod but the airports I went to were under ground about 4 meters.

Do you use alternative mesh? As I don't have that problem :isadizzy:

That's an interesting problem Joe as I believe the demo includes mesh as well so I would have thought the airports and mesh would line up.

I'm downloading now so once installed will check that out.

PS. Does anyone know if this overwrites any default files? ie landclass textures like FTX Global does or autogen or trees. And if it does then are the originals properly backed up? I think when I do install I will have to try it to a dummy FSX folder just to see exactly what happens.

EDIT: Finished the download and installed to a dummy folder. It seems the landclass textures are stored in ORBX folders so that is good. Bit disappointed to see some model libraries installed to Scenery/Global. Very disappointed to see some of the texture names used by these model libraries. Textures such as lighttower.dds or green.bmp. It is good practice, if installing anything to a default FSX folder, to at least use unique names to avoid the risk of overwriting anything. Generic names like lighttower or green is just asking for trouble.

Following is a list of the files added
Effects (some orbx fx)
ORBX (most of the files go in here)
Scenery/Global (some model libraries as mentioned above)
Scenery/World (looks like AFCADs for BIxx airports, these are needed to adjust the airport elevations due to a bug in FSX)
Sound (A handful of ORBX sounds, properly named)
Texture (4 autogen building textures, looks like the names are unique though not tagged as ORBX)
Weather/Themes (some ORBX weather themes)

You are missing out an awesome freeware. Look in my shot up above, it's quite spectacular!

It's probably a matter of some scenery entries messing it up, not a big deal. Do you know how to mess around with that? We can help you out if you don't, but there's also the Orbx freeware support forum. :)

I think what people may be misunderstanding about the Iceland Demo is that it is a small demo of the entire world Texture, LC and Mesh products, not a regional update like PNW or PFJ. Do the rivers and lakes freeze over in the default Iceland scenery? I don't think you get anything besides prettier scenery and corrected airports with FTX Global. If and when they do Regional scenery for this area, I would expect the lakes and rivers to freeze correctly like they do in the Pacific North West. But I could be wrong.

Thanks for this great gift! I really like it. Finally some proper scenery to fly my 33rd PS Curtiss P-40C :icon_lol:

Reykjavik

Sieggie, is correct, its a demo of FTX Global, so a great piece of scenery to check out ground textures and autogen. Nothing more, but definitely nothing less :jump:

After completing a few flights I think this is a great demo of the OpenLC system.

If you fly around the Alexander airport in the North of Iceland will may notice all the hundreds of little islands that are dotted through the river systems there. The coastlines and lakes and rivers seem to be really well defined.

I can't vouch for the accuracy of the road system but the towns seem to be vectored rather than just landclass which should provide better definition of the areas.

As for the textures themselves, well I've always wished that ORBX would put some more contrast into their ground textures, they always seem to be a bit too dull and not colourful enough for me and the Iceland demo continues the trend. Kind of like how things would look on an overcast day rather than on a sunny day.

Framerates are good and there is practically no stuttering. But that may be because most of Iceland is just snow and grass so there is very little actual autogen to slow things down.

I haven't bought FTX Global yet but if they release some good regions for OpenLC (at a sensible price) I would look again.
