I am currently flying the missions of Rami's 20th Fighter Group campaign for him as a test on my Windows 8 system. While driving the P-38J_20-FG_55-FS_Jeanne with extra fuel tanks I managed to reach a point only 43 miles from my target (Augsburg) in one mission and 32 miles from the target city in another. I used max fuel consumption efforts in both: I leaned out the mixture to the max and (on Rami's suggestion) used 65 percent throttle with 2000 prop RPM through the warp waypoints. and still never reached the halfway point - the target city - on either escort mission.

We both used auto fuel management. I tried to use my mouse to turn the fuel selection switch to DT (Drop Tanks only) on take off. I pause, select the switch position and when I un-pause (resume) the switch returns to All Tanks. The switch won't move at all unless I pause first. I hold my drop tanks until the last moment, then drop them and the fuel level stays at zero with the switch in the all position. Rami, on his Windows 7 system can't reproduce this error and makes the round trip with fuel to spare.. Could this be a Windows 8 thing, I wonder?

I could, of course, fly the missions on "Unlimited Fuel" but that defeats the fuel management challenge of the missions. Has anyone else encountered this with Windows 8 or 7? Any suggestions/ideas?

I flew the mission again for the fourth time, but this time I turned off auto fuel management. I greatly extended my range but had to constantly adjust mixture as I gained or reduced altitude. I didn't fly the whole mission, but I'm sure I could have done it with fuel to spare. I need practice adjusting mixture quickly. :applause:

Hey guys,

It sounds like the the planes might be the problem. That is just a guess. I do have a couple questions.

1) Has anyone tried this with Win XP, Vista or Win 7? If so what were the results?
2) Are the .air and .cfg files set correctly to use the drop tanks? Do they the same locations and capasities?
3) Did you factor in the weapons weight? I'd look at the weapon DPs and the Aircraft to get the total weights.

If you know the answer to those then my guess would be something isn't being read in Win 8. maybe a .dll or something.

Thats my 2 cents but maybe it will get the brain going.

Automix could be why it keeps switching back after you un pause.

Even with auto fuel management turned off the fuel tank selector switch won't work unless you pause and then it will return to original position when you resume. Note: when I dropped my tanks, the fuel level went to 100% as it should.

It is interesting that Rami told me he uses auto fuel management in the on position and he can fly the whole mission with no problem.
 
You both are on the same realism settings correct.

I had a data sheet to help with range calculations but I can find it now.

Are you adjusting the prop pitch too?

Without setting up everything I'm only guessing and not alot of help I'm afraid. Throw me a link to the plane and weapons then give me the starting location and destination and I'll play with it. I'll probably should do a ETO install.

I'm willing to help any way I can Shadow Wolf.

Yes, we are both using the same realism settings. Also, after throttle is reduced to 65% the prop pitch/rpms are reduced to 2000 rpm. The takeoff/home base is: England - Methwold and the target is: Augsburg GE. (an escort mission and I don't know what speed the bombers are set to in MB)

Hey guys,

I run Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit on my desktop, and Windows Vista 64-bit (with SP 3) on my laptop.

I get the same fuel results with each sim.

Oh yeah...I also use CFO weather. Does that make a difference?

Rami,

That could be the difference. Do you have the Weather set for the mission or are you letting CFO set it?

Does wind factor into CFS2s fuel economy? Head winds and tail winds? As you know if you have a tail wind then it would be easier. I've never tried on a long mission like that.

Shadow Wolf,

Now are you falling short of the target or the return trip? Because that same tail wind would hinder you on the way back, right?

I, like Rami am using CFO Weather. But the weather in the mission is imbedded either in MB or by hand editing. CFO can only change the time and turn off/on the cloud cover at this stage of the game. As far as I know and can tell, there is no wind in these missions.

As for the return trip... I didn't make one. I dropped my tanks with fuel remaining for combat and had 98% remaining for the return. I ended the mission after I got clear. Regulating my mixture myself instead of using auto fuel mixture GREATLY increased my range. I'm sure I would have made it back alright. I would seem that is the answer to the problem. :jump:

Glad you got it sorted out.

I wonder what settings the automix tries to run at. It sounds like it tries to keep it on the rich side. To bad that the sutomix can't be made to run leaner.

I have found that in my WWI missions it is best to leave it On. Otherwise you are too slow. Its interesting how it effects performance differently between the two eras.

I'll still try to do it myself so I know what to do.

There is a way to add weather through an edit. This is the breakdown of the wind at the surface.

Wind_Surface=914.40, 10.00, 0.00, 74.00, 0.00, 2, 1

Breakdown= Wind_Surface= 914.40 this is the alt from the surface in meters. This comes out to be about 2999.23 ft. max alt you will feel this wind.

10.00= wind speed

0.00= wind gust speed

74.00= wind direction

the 0.00, 2, 1= turbulence

With all things being equal: the mission; the aircraft; the fuel, throttle and rpm settings; the weather, the only uncommon denominator between Rami's range and mine seems to be different operating systems used. :dizzy:

It could be a case of the system out running the game.
I was going to suggest dropping some ammo from the guns but after looking at Rami's DP, I see he all ready has done that.
 
..flew the next mission to Salzwedel and back with auto fuel management turned on. I had only one fuel tank attached and had no problems - landed with 22% reserve. Payload was full ammo, 10 rockets, 1 1000lb bomb and 1 fuel tank.
