FYI: PalPal Email Scam... again

SOH-CM-2016
Every few months it seems, spammers send out fake PayPal notices to users. Fortunately, it's so very easy to tell they are fake...

...simply hover your mouse over the return "Agree today" (or whatever) link and see what the return address is (I've added two hypens to kill the link):

https:--//email-edg.paypal.com/r/EKXJE0M/6GE/UTTS9J/KGN8/JIP0/DD/h

What is important is that PayPal will never send such email to begin with, but the phoney return link address is a dead giveaway!

There seems to be a new cycle of these PayPal phish-mails going around. Have gone for around four years without any, now have received two this past week. I just forward them to spoof@paypal.com then delete.

It's an old Phishing technique.....old being a relative term I suppose.

However I would caution that many of these phishing campaigns are getting very sophisticated and it is often difficult to tell valid traffic from fraudulent.

One rule of thumb is that you have relationships with businesses, and none of those will ask you for personal data through an email. If you happen to be in a relationship with a business that does do that (I personally know of none), then I would halt that relationship immediately.

Also, I would never order products from a company that doesn't use port 443 (HTTPS, or secure socket layer).

Thanks to N4gix for pointing out that these are making the rounds again. They are sometimes cyclic in nature.

Damn.. I fell for it... Got in a hurry, I guess and wasn't paying attention.

Just sent the e-mail off to PayPal spoof and changed my password to PayPal. Also checked for any new transacations for PayPal, my credit card, and bank account and there are none. I always check all my accounts for any unusal activity, but now I'll be extra viligant for awhile.

But if anyone has some additional suggestions, I'm listening.

Thanks for the post.

Just relooked at my paypal e-mail that arrived today & it looks OK as the link goes to a https link that is umpteen characters long -also its a French site. As yet I cannot update the info because I have not yet received my new card.
Thanks for the heads up though & the info re the address to look out for.
Regards
Keith

I have yet to recieve one of these phish Paypal notices. I do however receive every few days a notice from Bank of America scammer trying to tell me I am overdue on my loan, and to send them my SSN, routing number, and all that crap to get current. Now I maintain a checkbook, and a list of bills I pay so it is very easy to determine this is fake. Plus none of these companies will e-mail you anyway. They will call. All you can do is forward it to the companies fraud department and hope they take action. Never give your information out over the net though, and if you are in doubt call the company/check your accounts and make sure.

I once got a message supposedly from PayPal indicating that my account had been compromised and that I needed to change my password. The web address went to China, so I reported it.

Ever since I had that guy watching as I typed in my password using " The Superaintispyware program" I have changed my PayPal password every 3 months. I just changed it again.
Fine fellow that one. He just might be the cause of my "Mellisa" infestation.
Speaking of which ........... I have had no emails returned in 3 days. I think I finely got rid of that one too.
Has anyone received any junk mail from me in the last 3 days? Like virgra or penis implants or the like?
:kilroy:

Nope, but I did receive a free sample of Viagra in the mail. I don't need such things, so I flushed it down the toilet. I couldn't get the darned toilet seat to go down for three days! :icon_lol::icon_lol::icon_lol::icon_lol::icon_lol:

Thank you, thank you! I'll be appearing all week and please, try the veal. :wavey:

Update

Here is the official response from PayPal spoof on said e-mail ...

Thank you for bringing this email to our attention. We can confirm that PayPal sent this email. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

To keep members informed of our products and services, PayPal occasionally sends emails to account holders. General Notification emails and Payment Notification emails are activated by default.

Yes, this is an official response. I'm now using a Paypal addon (Iconix) to Outlook that verifies the signature of any PayPal e-mails.

Honestly, that's even more disturbing. Now it'll be even more difficult to sort out the wheat from the chaff!

I wouldn't use PayPal at all were it not that of the devs I do work for insists on using it instead of mailing me a cashier's check... :(
