GAS Stearman pack for Fs9 and FsX ready

OK ..... I think I'm going to have to get this :jump:

Even if it's to see how close to the real Stearman it is.

Over the last year or so I've logged over 100 hours in the Stearman for real.

Pete.

Let us know Pete, my next payday is coming soon and this one just got added to the list of bills to pay!

Got it yesterday, and finally had some time to play around with it today. First off, They did a great job with the visual details and you cant beat the price for essentially 3 different aircraft. Secondly, I hope my critiques are not taken as "Bashing". I've had the opportunity to fly a 450 Stearman.

I spend the better part of today reworking the flight dynamics to get them more in line with the "real" Stearman. Flight Characteristics were WAYYY OFFF. Way Too Tail Heavy (Not even a Possibility with the 450) To get the airplane as close to the real deal, I ended up using The .Air File from Piglets UPF-7 and moved the CG forward. I also reworked the MOI for the ailerons, and elevators. The stearman does require large inputs when horsing it around, but the airplane is still responsive. All that said, it's worth the money if you are willing to take a little extra time to rework the few weak points. With all the changes posted below, I'm having a ball with this thing.

Quick Summary of all things changed.
Use Pigets UPF-7 Air File
Moved CG to +0.70
empty_weight_pitch_MOI= 4500
empty_weight_roll_MOI= 3476
empty_weight_yaw_MOI= 4288
elevator_effectiveness =2.050
aileron_effectiveness =3.450
rudder_effectiveness =3.5

Makes me laugh.

About the time salmon fishing starts I tell my boss I have an appointment at the bank. Bank of the river that is!! :icon_lol:

OK I finally purchased the Stearman and as for the detail of the models ..... the designers have produced an incredibly realistic Stearman. :applause::applause:

For real I fly a Boeing E75 Stearman 220-hp Continental R-670 7-cyl radial , so these coments relate to the 220 hp versions.

The cockpit detail is exquisite and the only thing missing compared to the one I fly are the Radios and Transponder ( mounted forward of the stick ) plus the switch panel ( mounted on the right side ).

Flying wise, the 220 hp version flies pretty close to the speeds I'm used to.

The ailerons produce a roll rate close to real life but the elevators are not as sensitive as the real thing. I'll play around with some cfg adjustments to see if I can improve that.

Sounds are very tame compared to real life ....... I mean the real Stearman is LOUD ... even with a David Clark headset or a helmet. :icon_lol:

So apart from the elevator effectiveness, I'd really like to crank up the grunt on the 220 hp sound :jump:

All in all ..... this is well worth the purchase price and a beautifull aircraft to have in ones hangar :applause:

Here's a pic of me during a take off in the Stearman at Taurange NZ ..........

Pete

I get an adrenaline rush just looking at the picture. That has got to be a rush to fly that beauty of a beast

Oh!...do you pilot the paid joy flights? I see the Stearman over my house just about every fine weekend (and some not so fine)...Love to come up one day...I am also quite keen one day to go for an aerobatic flight in the CT-4 :ernae:

..you've tempted me to go out and get the GAS Stearman

Thanks Pete. If I wasn't sold before, I am now. Look forward to hearing about your CFG change thoughts.
GREAT picture BTW.

Yep I do most of the commercial flights, both in the Stearman and the Ag Cat.

Pete.

Pete I'm looking forward to more comments - what a pleasure to have hands-on experience of the real thing!
I haven't been to Tauranga for years, but I am feeling the call ;)

And, what an opportunity to produce a first-class repaint!!!

Thanks sctybdy,

Will give it a try.

Cheers.:ernae:

We're glad that everyone's enjoying the package and taking the time to tweak it their satisfaction, having experienced Stearman pilot weigh in is helpful. Unfortunately we can't use Piglets UPF air file for a payware project, but it would be a treat fro all if sctby would package up the mod and upload it to SOH.

Thanks PeteHam for the review of the 220 version. Nice to know we got that one right.

Thanks again all

Spad54,
First off, I want to congratulate you and the Golden age staff on another winner. I have been waiting for someone to build a 450 stearman since I bought my first msfs. knowing several 450 Stearman owners now for many many years, quite a few will argue that the 300 lyc. conversion is the best of both worlds. Gives great performance, with better economy.
And Secondly, I'd be happy to package my changes up if It wont make Piglet or the Golden age staff mad. I seem to have your support, but what about piglet? Do I need to contact him for permission? I've never uploaded any thing for flight sim, so this will all be new to me. Your assistance would sure be appreciated.
And Lastly. Is there any chance that a 300 Lyc. and 450 version without the cowling and wheel pants be in the works? I may be wierd, but I really love the way the stearman's look with that big old engine sticking out there. Just something about somebody taking an old duster stearman and putting the front seat back in it and flying it for fun once again.
Thank you for all your hard work, and I cant wait to see what you guys do next.
Scott.:ernae:

It always pays to talk to the author and you have my permission to create a mod for our model. I suggest that you pm Piglet, he's a member of the forum, and just clear it with him. In most cases as long as your are making a free add-on, the designer will usually give you the "good to go" on that. The other alternative is to contact our flight dynamics team member Jim and collaborate with him. If you choose that route e-mail me at spad54@aol.com and I'll put you two together. I leave for Memphis for a week of CRM training , so try and get hold of me tomorrow or it will be a week before we can work on the mod.

Best
Paul
