A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Aircraft - German

Description: This is the Groundcrew He-111h-6, modified by Talon for skip-bombing. The Germans called this type of bombing the "Swedish Turnip" technique, which was also utilized by the Focke-Wulf Fw-200c-4 Kondor.

All rights and copyrights still belong to Groundcrew.

Thanks Rami but not necessary.

I may still have the FW 200 Condor that does the same thing and will drop full bombloads if interested.If I can;t find it I can redo it.

I just learned something new, I always thought only American pilots had discovered and mastered the skip-bombing tecnique. Anyway, I think that doing it with a He111 must be quite a challenge, because it's not as maneuverable and powerful as a B-25 Mitchell by any length.

Good morning,

Here's how to do the "Swedish Turnip" (No, this is not like the "Harlem Shake")

From the Luftwaffe War Diaries...

- Invented by a guy named Harlinghausen during the Spanish Civil War.
- A form of skip bombing.
- Normally used against naval targets.
- Approach speed of about 200 mph.
- Altitude of 45 meters.
- Bombs released while 240 meters from the target. They hit the target side or in the water next to the hull.
- Bombs had an 8 second delay. This allows time for the aircraft to fly past the blast area.
- This attack method could be used by any level bomber provided the pilot was properly trained.
- Employed by Fw-200s during their relatively short period of use as maritime bombers.
- Employed by the majority of Ju-88A4s during the devastating 2 Dec 1943 attack on Bari, Italy.

I find the last item most interesting. The Ju-88s could have dive bombed at Bari. They could also have attacked using torpedoes. Instead they chose to skip bomb. And the results were absolutely devastating. 105 bombers attacked Bari without fighter escort. They apparently suffered no battle losses at all! Apparently the low attack altitude allowed them bomb and be gone before anyone had time to man AA guns and launch fighter aircrraft. The 105 Ju-88A4s sank 17 ships and heavily damaged 7 more. Phenomenal results by WWII bomber standards.

Perhaps Ernst Udet was wrong in thinking that dive bombing was the only way to bomb accurately. Perhaps turning the Ju-88 into a dive bomber was an expensive mistake that only served to lower aircraft performance. What do you think?
 
Skip bombing was developed independently by several nations between the wars, but was not in widespread use until delayed action fused ordnance became more widely available.

The he 111 is also setup to glide bomb ( if bombing ships they must be set to 5 knots or less ) and will launch both it's regular torpedos at the sametime.

I have the KM Ju88 setup to glidebomb and if you want I can set it up to skipbomb.

I noticed you edited the US 500lb GP bomb damage profile to make it "skip-able". I know I am the usual pest when it comes down to historical accuracy, and I apologise for it, but can I use the same dp file on either Dbolt's or GC's Luftwaffe 250kg SC bomb? :wiggle:

Even if 250kg are slightly heavier than 500lb it should work the same way, shouldn't it?

The US 500lb selected is configured as a "torpedo" weapon. Penwin did this as a payload for Tangos B25s & explained the logic better than I will, but essentially the game believes the payload is a (fast) torpedo, so the AI will attack using a profile like a torpedo attack (ie low).
So unless jap/italian/brit/german weapons are similarly configured (new weapon bgls), I'd stick with the US 500lb payload.:sheep:

I'm stickler for historic accuracy too but used what was available.Remember I don't fly much in the ETO so don't know all the different weapons used.

Pen32Win made the mod for the skipbomb.He used the WEP_DB_US_500lb_GP_c because it wasn't used much in other plane loadouts and it is a torpedo.You probably modify a 250kg bomb the same way but all planes that carry that bomb would see it as a torpedo.You'd have to use one that isn't used on other planes or modify the other planes DPs.

You don't have to make a new weapon bgl for it,just modify the weapon DP.
 
Yes, if you did new dedicated bomb .bgls for skip bombing, you would have 2 options in the .dp... You would only need to decompile a stock or other bomb to a scasm file & rename it to say 'Wep_250lb_skipbomb' & recompile to a new .bgl which would be a lot easier than making a whole new bomb.. Hmmm, I may give this a shot.

I didn't mean you, but I am sure there are some folks out there who think I must be classified among the "rivet-counters"! Now I remember you made this comment already on other occasions, you dedicate most of yor combat sim time to the PTO. I instead like to embrace military aviation history of the entire world, but I must admit I keep on jumping all over the place and I have unfinished projects hanging since eons ago! My enthusiasm tends to make me dispersive, but, at least, I have a pretty good idea of 90% addons availability out there.

You, UncleTgt and OW are right, it's a fact that modifing a weapon dp will affect it permanently, I think Pen32Win chose one of Dbolt's US arsenal because there is plenty models of the same bomb to pick from. So I gave to it some thought during the weekend and I came up with this solution:

Paul Rebuffat enclosed in all of his splendind Bf109 series a Jabo Luftwaffe weapon pack that includes 50kg, 250kg and 500kg SC bomb models. Although Rebuffat's planes still excel for their design, I long since replaced his Luftwaffe bombs in all of his Bf109s for better looking GC/Dbolt's weapons. On the other hand, he dedicated more attention to RAF 250 and 500lb short-fin GP aerial bombs in his Spitfire late marks collection, which I still use to date.

This leaves a moderately rough-looking 250kg SC bomb free for deplyoment as a German skip-bomb weapon.

I'll simply copy over the US skip-bomb damage profile to Rebuffat's 250kg SC, hang it in GC's He111H-6 bomb bay and see what happens.
