GeForce 6800 cards and CFS3 problems

Hi

I haven’t been able to run CFS3 since I put in a GeForce 6800 video card as mentioned here:
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=15991

I get these errors:
CFS3 Configuration
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 4.14.10.8198
CFSConfig could not determine your hardware's configuration. Try reinstalling Combat Flight Simulator or updating your video card drivers.

When starting CFS3 I get this error message:
The configuration file is out of date.
Please re-run CFS3.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled CFS3, tested different video card drivers and tested everything I and others here at this forum has come up with.

Is GeForce 6800 known to be problematic with CFS3?
Has any one been able to get CFS3 running with this card?

CFS3 is not the only game I’m having troubles with so it might be that GeForce cards don’t work well in Windows 98, so one option I’m thinking of is to install Windows XP in a dual boot environment. But before I do that I would like to know if it might be a workable solution.

Your problem is definitely Win98 related. Moving over to WinXP Pro would indeed be a good idea! But first run the CFS3 config utility... ya never know!

And if your rig is up to it, you might wanna consider the new Windows 7!

I'm running a 6800 with no problems, but I'm XP Pro, so that could be your issue?
It's not the best card but it's not bad, btw don't forget to connect it's power supply cable, that's easily overlooked!

I run dual 6800 GTXs...no problem now. I believe it's Windows 98. Wow, that's amazing you're using that still.

If your rig is running Win98, it's very unlikely to be up to running Windows 7, but the stability of XP over Win98 is a no-brainer. I'd go for Pro too, if only because I've had no problems with it in 4 years and it runs really nicely on this new rig too.

The 6800 problem sounds like something Win98 is mangled. Oh dear - reinstall?

DONT Uninstall!

Hi von Oben,
this is not a card or an OS problem. The quoted error message, when I've encountered it, is that your configoverrides file is out of date/mismatched somehow.

All you should have to do is to run cfsconfig.exe, from your current instal. I recommend the config setup that is provided by Groundcrew which is still available, via Regshanger.com, in the Groundcrew/Garage Corner section.

HTH,

From his first thread

"OK but when I do run the CFS3 cfg I get this message:

He can't run the CFS3 config file.

Dual 6800 GTX's Crow?? I thought you said you were running dual 8800GTX's......that could explain why my 9800GTX can run a few of the settings we tried that yours was stuttering on, I was surprised because I figured SLI 8800GTX's would at least par the 9800GTX if not surpass it....or do you have multiple gaming rigs to bounce around on?? :isadizzy:

Hi

I’m only trying to find possible causes why the 6800 card doesn’t work well with any games on my pc.
CFS3 doesn’t approve of any of the drivers I have tested, and I’m running out of ideas.

If there’s anything more I can try, please let me know!

Thanks!

Doh...I have dual 8800GTXs. I misread. Sorry.

Hi

Some more info:
There is a file created called DebugTrace.log in the C: Root

The log file says:

*** Rockall Failure: Delete fails in DeleteArea ***

What does this mean?

VonOben....graphic card drivers can be a pain in the butt sometimes. I run a GF 9800GTX overclocked and watercooled, blah, blah, blah....point being I am constantly udating and changing the drivers for it in the quest for ever elusive better FPS. First...might be a silly question, but I have to ask....are you running the latest driver version available for your GF 6800? Go to www.nvidia.com and use their driver finder to get the latest officially available driver for your card and operating system. Another resource (and where I go for updates to drivers) is www.guru3d.com you can find many versions of the forceware drivers here for Windows XP, Vista, and 7. They also have a terrific forum discussing the different versions and performance/installation issues associated with them. Third place to look is the website for the manufacturer of your graphics adapter, although they most often just link you to nvidia's driver download area. After you find the latest and greatest driver for your card and save it (don't run from the download page) to your desktop or pc somewhere, right click on my computer and select properties, then select hardware, then device manager.....in device manager double click on your display adapter and select driver, select uninstall and check the delete files box, click ok....when its done, close device manager, select restart later, open my computer, select C:/ (or your system drive if different), look for any folders named nvidia, if you do not have a nForce motherboard just delete the nvidia folder completely, if you have an nForce motherboard open the nvidia folder and delete the forceware file inside. Go back to C:/, open program files and again look for nvidia or nvidia corporation folders, delete following same rules as above. Empty your recycle bin. If you want to be thorough about this, download Nasty File Remover from guru3d.com, it scans the registry and Windows folder for leftover fragments of nVidia drivers and deletes them. After emptying recycle bin, restart, boot into safe mode (F8 during startup) and run NFR if you have it, boot into Windows normally if not. Cancel the new found hardware wizard. Run the setup.exe for the new driver files you downloaded....and hopefully any driver issues should be fixed. Cleaning completely of the old drivers files is an absolute must....sometimes you can get lucky and install over the old version without trouble, but not very often.

Second.... shut down your computer, remove the power from the back, hold power button for 30 seconds to clear electricity in the system, open the case, remove the display cable from the back of your video card, remove the video card from the computer. Check to be sure the fan is clean and still plugged into its connector. lightly dust the VGA or PCI-E slot with canned air or vaccuum. reseat the video card carefully, make sure to keep your fingers off the connection pins that go into the slot, oil from your skin interferes with the electrical conductivity. Plug in the external power to your video card if it needs it (could be the trouble to begin with, at least check to see if it needs it and if its plugged in, card will not work without it), connect display, replace case side, power up, and start your PC.

Number three....go to www.microsoft.com , in their downloads area, get the latest directx for endusers....can cause no end of grief without this or with outdated version. Its free as long as you have a valid Windows OS installed.

After those....if this 6800 is an upgrade to an older computer, check your power supply....if its only a 200w to 300w PSU, buy something bigger.....graphics take a lot of power...
If you are having problems with the card with any application you try and the above checks do not help it......contact your card's manufacturer to see about an RMA because you might just have faulty hardware. Quite often I see video cards that still function enough to display windows, but not enough to be recognized as a 3D Graphics Adapter....a bad GDDR chip, overheated mossfett, scratched trace or many other minor issues can do this to your card. When all else fails......see if you can return or exchange it!!

Hope this helps you....good luck

^^ Good advice up there from rogue.

I still believe it's Win98 related. The newest drivers probably aren't even compatable with Win98.

Sorry, I didn't read back far enough to catch that he is running this on a Win 98 OS......yep, I would have to say OldCrow is hitting it pretty much square on the head........PM me if you want to pick up a windows XP with product key/COA for a reasonable price. I am in the Vista and Windows 7 configuration, and have Windows XP that I can let go of....the difference is incredible...

Hi

Thanks for your advices, I really appreciate your help. :)

I’ve tested 9 different drivers, including the last one available for Windows 98.
Downloaded drivers from Nvidia and Guru3d and I have asked the manufacturer about drivers several times, but they only direct me to the Nvidia website.
Thorough cleaning has been made after each uninstall.

Latest available DirectX for Windows 98 installed 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904).

It’s a second hand card so it might be faulty. I cleaned the fan before putting the card in.
External power cable is plugged in and the power supply is 350W if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the kind offer about the XP license, rouge. I bought a license a while ago to be on the safe side though, so I’m going to install this weekend to see if it makes any difference.

Cheers

hmmm..
could be the program can't delete the old config in the cfs3 - application data folder?

try deleting the whole folder manually (back up your joystick setting before!)

then run the config proggy again...

hope it helps

You are welcome. I think you'll enjoy the experience much better on the XP operating system. It is starting to sound to me like a faulty piece of hardware though. Windows 98 is slow as molasses in December, but it is functional, and you can find drivers for the GF 6800 that are 98 compatable. Have you checked in your device manager to see if the system recognizes the video card as a GF 6800, or as a VGA compatable graphics adapter? If you have installed drivers, but it only sees a VGA comp adapter.....its a faulty vid card for sure....and if it is happening with any application you run....its most likely the video card is faulty. Install XP, install drivers, and see what happens....it might fix itself. If you happen to have another powersupply available, just for the fun of it, try a different PSU....I have been stumped many times trying to troubleshoot a failing PC and found simply replacing the PSU fixed it all.....

Good luck friend, hope you are flying soon....

Hi

I have deleted the config file, it didn’t help. :blind:
The card is displayed as a GeForce 6800.

Hi von O,

I've looked though your posts, and you do not say if you have run cfsconfig.exe after deleting the config file under the Application Data pathway? Is it after you run config.exe that you get the error message: "CFS3 Configuration
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 4.14.10.8198
CFSConfig could not determine your hardware's configuration. Try reinstalling Combat Flight Simulator or updating your video card drivers." ?

Its not clear from your posts.

Well. if Windows sees the card correctly, but no other 3D game applications do.....thats gotta narrow it down to the Windows 98 computer and operating system, not enough electricity, or the longshot....a freaky fault in the video card itself. You said you were going to install XP, thats a good place to start....might make all the difference right there. Be sure to download your video card, motherboard, LAN, audio, and other system device drivers before installing XP, I hate it when I run a fresh setup, plug in the ethernet cable, and then discover I have to download the NIC adapter driver before I can get online and download the rest that are needed......:isadizzy:........If you find your self wanting to upgrade your motherboard, CPU, and/or RAM....let me know. I repair and recycle alot of PC components and can probably set you up as far as a decent Pentium 4 rig to handle XP and mild games......without costing a fortune...I usually have a few choices hanging around here in various parts and pieces....

Thanks, and good luck...
