What a wonderful story. And a very brave man indeed. I am glad he was honoured by France and by the efforts of French veterans given the highest civilian honour as well. Humanity and companssion are in the end the true goals of any sane society. thank you for sharing that.

If he had been an allied service person, and had destroyed the explosives store, (and in so doing had killed other allied personnel), which had allowed the enemy to capture the port intact for further use against his own country.

In general terms, you make a good point Collin, but you bypassed the specific goals of the allies versus the axis powers. The allies fought mainly for world liberation from wicked axis domination, not vice versa. So any allied serviceperson doing these deeds would be betraying the righteous goal of life and liberty for the enslaved masses of Europe and Asia. On the other hand, this individual betrayed the darkened aims of a madman and his legions. The merits of an act are defined by the goal in mind.
