Golf Balls Like You've Never Seen Them

Pretty cool. Some look like cut hailstones. So this makes me think, I'm ignorant of golf matters, do balls get picked daily by the player depending on the course, weather, etc. or do they just have a favorite?

For regular play between buddies no one really cares. Use whatever....I used to use lady pro balls (that sounds sort of odd, doesn't it?) because my neighbor used to get them by the gross. They were pink.
In tournament play balls must meet the criteria established by the USGA, or the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. That's just about every ball made, so not so much of an issue. There are balls that don't meet those criteria though, just like there are clubs that don't. Again, not much of an issue unless you're playing for money.

Most golfers (that play more than once a year) have a 'favorite' ball. Whether determined by price, testing, reviews, professional recommendation or a sponsorship contract depends on a few things but mostly how good you are

There are differences in # of layers, composition, cover materials and 'dimple' design (which affects the aerodynamics -see, this is aviation-related)

Back in the early 1980's I was given a sleeve of illegal balls to try out. They were called Robinhood or some such and were super compressed and a tad smaller than sanctioned USGA balls. Boy they would fly a long way with the driver but before I could use them with a group, I lost them all deep in the woods never to be found again.
