I have Vista on my laptop and stand by her. She's never let me down once I figured out that UAC needs to be turned off if you're computer literate.
 
When I give this CPU a retirement (still a few years I hope) I'll jump from XP straight to Windows 7 (or whichever name they give to their next OS).

I've heard so many complaints about Vista that no matter how good it may have become, I'd never get it. Hopefully this way Microsoft will hesitate to release a bag of bugs to the public.

Acceptable for a freeware beta tool, not for a +150€ OS.
 
Service Pack 3 will have continuing support until 2014 as of the last meeting with Microsoft support team.
 
Does it really matter whether they continue support for it or not?

If it is a stable system, you have hardware that runs it, and you have excellent firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware programs, who cares whether or not M$ continues to support it.

I had a old machine that continued to run 98SE until I downloaded SP4. As long as I kept it at SP3 it was a rock solid OS. It just did not like BIG hard drives and lots of RAM and would not run newer games and programs. As long as we do not try to make XP do more than it is capable of doing, it should remain stable for running CFS2 with enough RAM and system resources.

I build missions under XP, and have NO problems flying them under Vista and Win 7.

Yes

Support covers 2 areas:

1) Improvements to make the o/s run more smoothly and add/or enhanced functions.

2) Security patches to close vulnerabilities to malware & hackers.


I'm not concerned about #1 ... XP runs fine; however #2 is very important. But 2014 is a while away yet - not to worry. I agree that if your security is strong; then there really isn't much to worry about after 2014.

In the meantime ... I've got a new(er) PC coming in next week ... think I'll try VISTA Black Edition 2009 on it for fun.

More mixed behavior from the potheads at M$: Not long ago they licensing of XP to be put on I assume new and used computers for sale until 2020.

Andrew,

First: I find your use of the angry icon very disturbing and not at all called for! Second: I have an opinion and I have every right to vent that opinion without people getting angry. It's based on experience not on mere assumption. Every action I undertake on my laptop with Vista takes about 15 minutes and sometimes the whole day! These facts are so frustrating that I have given up on my laptop thanks to Vista.

My laptop came with Vista. It lasted about 1 month. I then got hold of the drivers I would need to run XP and switched to XP. It was like I got laptop with twice the performance. Perhaps Vista works well for some people, but on my laptop anyway, it was a bloated piece of c**p!!

I'll be so happy when XP is gone for good. It makes me cringe when I have to use it on the school computers...

Vista 64 worked flawlessly for me. It was just as stable as W7 64 is for me now. It didn't have the retarded taskbar thing either, like w7 has.

I meant it as kind of a joke. I takes a lot more than that to get me upset. Call it a "Cartman-esque" reaction.

My apologies, opinions and honest discourse regarding experiences are always welcome here. I guess you don't know me well enough yet to know that I have a...well...twisted sense of humor. :redface:
 
Well, the way I see it Vista64 has done all I have asked it to do. I believe most of what I WANTED it to do was stuff you guys were used to doing with XP. Vista 64 works so well for me, I am not even going to bother with "7". I was just about to the point of believing that I needed XP, then I started to learn a little bit about how to make Vista work. I am very happy with Vista and I hope I never have to use anything else. For Gosh sake let's not wake Dirty up! :salute::ernae:
 
I have XP on my desktop and Win7 on my laptop and am quite happy with both.

I hope they keep supporting XP until 2014 as written above. I am commander of my DAV (Diisabled American Veterans) chapter and we just purchased one of our officers a newly built desktop with XP (we would have had to buy a new printer and expensive new programs - Adobe, Photo Shop etc.) if we had gotten a Win7 machine.

Cees, Rami was making an understatement; he said he has a twisted sense of humor. That is only half true. Rami is TWISTED! Just ask Dirtman.

I mean, the guy teaches other people's children in a public school by choice. How twisted is that??????????????

No more Windows XP preloads allowed on new PCs

As TechFlash’s Todd Bishop reminded us, as of today, October 22, PC makers are no longer allowed by Microsoft to preload Windows XP on new PCs.
Netbooks were the last category of PCs on which Microsoft was still allowing XP preloads at this point. Back in April 2008, Microsoft told OEMs that October 22, 2010, would be the day that no more XP Home would be permitted to be preinstalled on new netbooks.

Update: XP preloads are done, but XP downgrades are not, by the way. Best any of us Microsoft watchers can tell, it looks like XP downgrades will be allowed up until 2015. (Microsoft won’t confirm or deny that date.)
