Some scary crap. High elevation ops and playing around = scary combo. They say nobody was killed... still makes you cringe watching the video. You can see it coming. Several soldiers on the ground are amazingly missed NARROWLY.

The crew is facing criminal charges. :( My heart goes out to them and anyone else affected by this unfortunate incident caused by what probably seemed like harmless fun at the time. Sucks when a little bit of fun and a lapse in judgement ends like this. They screwed up. :(

The crew is facing criminal charges.
As they should be. They destroyed a multi-million $$ helo, whatever mission they were assigned was canceled or delayed, and somebody else had to pick up the slack. Just because that crew wanted to look "Sierra Hotel" (sh*t-hot) to the troops on the ground. In spite of the disclaimer that nobody was injured, I'm sure the crew suffered some back and lower body injury from that impact. So now they'll be in pain the rest of their lives - because they were stupid. :frown:

Back when I was in the Army ( a lonnng time ago ) a couple pilots destroyed an AH-1G while chasing a rabbit around in the tall grass next to the runway. Hooked the tip of a skid while trying to turn and flipped it onto its side, with predictable results: the rotors demolished themselves and the transmission was torn from its moorings. The pilots were'nt seriously hurt. That was the only time I ever saw the explosive canopy cutter system used in anger, it actually worked; they were considered so unreliable that all our Cobras were equipped with breakout knives mounted in each cockpit.

I never heard the final disposition of the pilots, the helicopter was a total loss.

I'm amazed how well the main airframe held together, that machine really hit the ground hard. Impressive (unintentional) demonstration of a superb design.
