• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

    If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Google Earth PORKED itself yesterday!

Some freaking moron(s) at Google Earth managed to take a functioning
tool and turn it into an absolutely unusable one through their latest
"enhancements" that get applied whether you want them or not!

The "Points of Interest" layer, which previously had a great many
sub-layers has now been reduced to a On/Off switch!

You can no longer filter the display of icons for restaurants of
various types, lodging, transit stops, etc.

Instead you either get to see them all or none at all.

Plus they have reduced the size of the icons and many categories are
now all the same freaking color making it even harder to "filter"
with your Mark I eyeball!

Not only do these "enhancements" apply to the latest version, they
also PORK earlier versions as well by installing themselves unannounced.
It matters not that you have auto updates for GE turned off.

I am absolutely dumbfounded by the change made to the POI layer.
It makes no sense whatsoever. I can't imagine that ANYONE would
think that removing the ability to filter the majority of the
displayed content was a good idea. Nor can I fathom how anyone
with any common sense at all could have approved this change!

Google Earth has just become the "New Coke"!!!

That is a reference to Coke's attempt to market a "new Coke" a few years back. That effort
was a disaster, much like yesterdays Google Earth "enhancement" attempt.

Coke soon backtracked and discontinued the "new Coke" campaign and returned to the
"old", trusted and liked version.

I agree, I just turned it on and noticed many of the different choices I had for layers are now condensed making it more difficult to isolate things. While Google earth is still a very useful program, this new layer system was created by a 'p-tach' as the klingons would say
 
One actually has to wonder how they did that. I turn off or disable google's updater service just because I don't want the thing running on my machine unless I want to do an update.

I understand they own the software but let me choose where or not I wanted new functionality. I only had airports checked in that field now when I want to see them I will have to look at all the clutter.

Where is that MS earth viewer mapping whatever it is program I threw out a year ago?
 
Must have been a PO'd ex M$ employee. Always someone out there that'll ruin a good thing just to make themself look good.

I bet it was the one that when they passed out brains they thought they'd said trains.... and took the first one out.
 
I just checked this...can't see a real big hassle but....I checked one of our local golf courses and it is completely incorrectly named. They used to have a place where you could submit corrections, seems to be gone now.

Try finding all the restaurants in New York or Prague that serve a particular cuisine.
Or try finding various transit stops amid the clutter of all the other little blue icons
or find hotels within a several block radius without having to zoom way in and
scan, block by block.

The removal of the multiple sub-layers under Points of Interest has made the
above tasks extremely difficult now where they were once quite easy.

I also have heard but not verified that airport ID's are gone.

I had to update my Google Earth the other day as the old one wouldn't open, and the popup indicated I had to download the update to continue using it.

With the compulsory update I wasn't happy to have the choice taken from me.

I now find the program regularly locks up and becomes unresponsive.
