Got a Treadmill the other day...

Lionheart

SOH-CM-2014
Hey all,

Yep. I have gained a ton of weight. I hate it. I am not ready to start walking, hiking, and mountain climbing yet as I am so out of shape. I found a treadmill at Wallmart (that I had been watching for several months now) suddenly on sale, and I took the leap. Set it up in the garage (its cool in Phoenix presently, not extremely hot now), and have been learning how this thing works. Pretty darn cool!

I used to be 155 pounds, striving for ripped abs (lumbs in belly section of fuselage), doing 600 crunches and 250 leg lifts per morning, and mountain climbing 3 laps per day, 6 days a week, totally just under 10 miles for 3 laps, which half of it was spent going up a very steep grade/incline. Sometimes I climbed that baby in the rain. I wanted ripped abs bad.

Anyways, I pray that God restores me. I wish this obesity on no person. Its horrible to walk into stores and not be able to find one single shirt you can wear. Horrible... I see myself in the mirror and still do not recognize myself.

For those of you that might be in the same boat, pull out of the dive! Lets kick some obesity butt!

To give you an idea of how much I gained, do this. For you all that are in your perfect weight, lets say 160 for the skinny ones, take some bags of dogfood in a big store, 50 pounders, and put them on your shoulders some how. If you are 160 pounds, then pile on exactly that much on your shoulders. Now walk to the far side of the store and back. Get down on your knees to pray, then stand back up. Check out how difficult it is to carry your own body weight, doubled. That is my life presently. Very 'not' good...

Bill

For you all that are in your perfect weight, lets say 160 for the skinny ones,
160! Skinny! Man I wish I could get UP to 160!

I've lost so much weight since I became ill that I can't even remember what 160 was like. I'm 5'11" and weigh in at 125 lbs now. Believe me when I say that I look in the mirror and have seen healthier looking corpses!

Good luck with your weight loss Bill, I'm desperately trying to find a way to gain weight!

Every day?!?!?

Goodness, that's not good for your body, not good at all!
A former bodybuilding friend of mine told me to exercise every three to four days to get the most out of the training. Muscles need regeneration phases just like you need sleep. Those pauses between training is the only way for them to regenerate and grow. If you put strain on them day after day, muscles won't build up at all and you'll actually have them getting weaker! So train every three to four days and you'll be fine.
If you want to lose weight, drink more. And I mean either bottled or (filtered) tap water, not coke or diet drinks. Just plain old water. It fills your stomach and - the best of it all - your body actually needs energy to process it, so you'll burn calories by doing next to nothing.
Also, cut down on sugar. No more cola at home, no more Mars bars for snacks, no more unthinned fruit juice (fruit sugar is also sugar). Keep to three meals a day and some fruit in between (for the vitamin supply). If necessary, cut down your portions.
Generally, use more energy than you supply and your body will attack those fat cells.

I've never been fat or overweight, but I've been in fairly bad shape after I've left the army. Last year I've started cutting down on my diet. Started drinking more water, banned chocolate and other snacks in my household and slightly cut down my portions. I've lost ten pounds by just doing that!
At the beginning of this year, I've started exercising regularly. Arms, chest, back, abs, shoulders. I used videos on Youtube for instructions and bought dumbbells. They aren't heavy and they won't turn me into Ahnold, but they work well for general muscle training and I've made visible progress since last winter. :d
I've also recently started going for a run once a week (yeah, dumb idea in the autumn months, I know), so I now exercise the whole body. It costs me about three hours every week and combined with a relatively strict diet (I've got used to going to bed hungry) I feel as good as never before.
That doesn't mean that I've turned into a health freak. I still smoke, you can still meet me drunk on parties and pizza, kebap, fries or hamburgers are still on my menu. All I did was minimizing their ill effects on my stamina and body fat respectively.

Anyways, I wish you a ton of success with losing that excess weight.

Just don't set yourself any unrealistic goals and try to pull a Rocky. Downsize where you can and dwell on the little successes. Like successfully resisting the temptation of a chocolate bar. Or the really nice feeling of freshly exercised, nearly exhausted muscles. Or the endorphine kick on a run, which can make you go for miles and miles and miles...

And always remember: Calories in < calories used.

Sorry to hear about you struggling with your weight loss. I know it is not everyones problem, but for me I eat a lot of junk food which is my problem. Whenever I go on a proper (nasty tasting) diet I always get down to about 160. My average weight is around 180. I couldn't imagine being twice my size though. I feel a large difference losing 20 pounds. To loose half would be a massive relief. All I can say is start slowly and work your way back up.

also as one of blokes down the gym keeps saying ... 80% of the work is done on the plate, the other 20% is in the gym!

I feel for ya Bill. I started in April loosing weight. Was at 280 pounds. Now at 203,trying for 190. Doc would like to see me at 160 but I told him that ain't gonna happen because I weighted more than that in high school...lol. Biggest draw back to loosing weight is everything ya like to eat ya need to stop. Smaller portion, lots of water and try just walking an hour on your tread mill and just watch TV while ya walking. Time goes by slow at first but as ya keep doing that it will start to go by faster. I am 6'3 but my body mass says I am still over weight . Last place ya loose weight is the stomach....good luck...Mike

I've recently shed ~14kg over the course of 2 months....mainly from cutting out junk food, limiting myself to 3 meals a day (2 initially),cut out all alcohol intake for a while and more exercise. It wasn't easy, but it's not supposed to be. Hang on in there Bill and you'll definitely see the benefits.

Yep, the older you get, the better you were. I like exercise but it makes me tired but have lately been on the treadmill trying to get it off. Was 5'9" in HS and weighed 102 pds, now over a 100 more.

Good luck and don't be like many people and let the treadmill gather dust. I kind of like it now and go 3-4 days a week

Many thanks guys.

Bjoern,

You are right. I fried my ab muscles. I found that out the hard way after months of extreme workout, thinking I was cooking the fat out of those area's, when in reality, my muscle zones there were only perhaps diminishing or holding their ground. doing that every other day or more would have been better. I didnt know. I know now... argh.

Its great to be in shape. I miss it. Man, I miss it. I am really tired of this payload.

Bill,

I also bought a treadmill a few months back for the same reason. I have it set up in my kitchen where my computer is, and I watch movies while on the treadmill. Really makes it enjoyable, and I don't watch the clock. The treadmill DOES make a difference. I got out of the habit for a while, but am back into it. The adrenalin will give you a "jump start", and provide an energy boost for the rest of your day!

Good luck!

Pete

I wish you luck, Bill. It's hard when sitting at a computer all day = putting bread on your family's table.

Oh man, Bill.

I wish you all the best!
Walk on that treadmill about 45 minutes.
30 minutes is when your metabolism starts to kick in.

Ok I will say it again, start walking on the tread mill for 5 minutes and GRADUALLY increase till you reach 45 minutes. On the 30 minute mark is when your metabolism starts to kick in and your body starts burning calories!

Drink plenty of water!
Eat healthy!
You are not alone, I myself is struggling of losing those extra pounds!
I use to weigh 90 lbs on a 4'11" body!
Now I am me and a half.
You can do it, man!
You can do it!
:running:
