Graphics card suggestions

My latest graphics card has apparently gone down the crapper thusly I am open to suggestions for a replacement that is relatively economical & of course, functions well with CFS2. I run Windows Xp. My present card is/was a Rage 128 pro & gave acceptable performance until it decided to go South on me

OW,

for decent and nicely priced cards, I always found 'Sapphire' cards to be a steal. The ones I've had are ATI (not sure if they do NVidia?) and they have been cheaper than other vendors for the same specs.

Price Range ?

I'm with Jamie - The ATI Radeon HD 4770 has good reviews, is priced around $100.00, and works well with older AND newer sims.

[I would have recommended my old standby, the BFG series of nVidia graphics cards, but they've jumped off the market and are no longer even honoring warranties on older PCBs... That means my matched pair of SLI graphics cards will have to survive a lot longer before I swap them out...]

Hi Oldwheat

Hi Oldwheat
I have an ATI Radeon HD5670 1GB DDR3. It seems to work ok. I have XP and an older Pentium IV, 3.00G computer. It was about $80.
It is important that it can fit into the 'space' within the case. Some graphics cards are really big and can't fit.
Cheers

Yes, I have a 'freebie' graphics card in my drawer that won't fit. It was too large as I recall.

'm kind alooking @ the Sapphire Radeon HD 7750. What do you think?

Nvidea seems to be the way to go gaming wise. Ati always lag behind them. I got and use at the moment an ATi 6870 by Sapphire because I wanted to exploit the Eyefinity tech which Nv did not have at the time. I was disappointed with it overall as the fps fell to single figures. When I can afford I will be going back to Nv as they now do have a 3 monitor support scheme.
All my opinion of course. It is a two horse race but on balance I think Nv have the edge.

All good info. I still haven't decided.. More suggestions will be appreciated especially if accompanies with model numbers to look for.

Will your system take an AGP or a PCIe card? I thought the Rage128 was an AGP card.

T.

I'm not sure & I will not be able to take a look for a few more days. I'm not the one who installed the Rage128 but it did work;quite well actually, for about a year.

You need to know if it is AGP or PCI and you also need to know your power supply specs. Most older systems will have AGP and will have a low wattage power supply. If that's the case, you are pretty limited as to what you can buy. Don't worry about what will run CFS2. ANY modern card will run it just fine.

I 'upgraded' to a newer rebuilt rig & will be looking for a replacement in the future for the presently installed Radeon 7000. At least the PC is functioning now although rather slowly.
