Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat overhaul released by Allen!

Oh, well.....

I'm rebuilding the stock model. It will use the stock style prop disks.

OOOOPS! My enthusiasm got the best of me....this time I was too quick on the fingerboard and I did not check the screenies too carefully.

Nevertheless, I am sure many around here

will more than welcome an improved stock F6F as well!!!

:applause: :applause: :applause:

If you are going to use the same prop model you placed on your B-24J, on your FM-2 and the others this new Hellcat will look beautiful!

Thank you again!

Model is done I think. Below is a .gif of the LODs.

Click to play and/or inlarge depending how the fourm works.

Same detail prop is used for the main LOD and VC. Lower LODs will use the basic stock prop.

Hi Allen

This is an afterthought, but would it be possible for you to remove the crude pilot figure completely so we could add Wolfi's US pilot through the dp file? If I alpha out the model pilot texture the priority of the figure means it now is a clear figure that over-rides all textures behind it making a pilot shaped hole. It blanks out the dp pilot too.

BTW nice job on the prop blades - they needed it.

PS I left you a PM regarding a permission if you hadn't seen it yet.

I'll leave the pilot figure in as it dose work like CFS2 pilots do and will be removed when placed as an object but I will set the pilot to have 1% transparency. This should let you alpha out the pilot with out a hole.

Try the attached model.

Got you PM about the B-24J and replyed last night. It is fine with me.

Allen,

Works perfectly! Thank you.

And thanks for the permission too.

Good to know for sure. I gave you permission once already.

Also that model should be final model unless you find any bugs that need to be fixed. It has all of the LODs and is "combat" ready.

EDIT:

Okay I'm not done with the model.

I'm wondering if the cockpit had cut outs to see out of the back windows like in the screen below?

This is nit picky for sure. The only thing I can spot is the tailhook extends too far and there are a few gaps inside the hook opening. Everything else is spot on as far as I can see. The model looks great and all of the animations work properly. I'm really pleased as we will now have a very good dash 3 model after all these years. :encouragement::encouragement::encouragement: Thank you again.

Just curious, I saw Uncle Tgts PM. Did you intend to do a dash 5 model as well by making the quarter windows solid?

See my edit above about the cockpit. Will look at the tail hook now before bed. I can re-patch the windows to make a F6F-5.

EDIT:

I hate doing carrier aircraft. Folding wings part linking takes what seem to be hours and tail hooks always kick right between the legs and keep kicking me when I'm down.

Now that I have gotten up from my beat down I have the tail and tail hook fix...

Hi bub

With Allen's elegant solution you can have your cake or eat it too. If you are happy with the M$oft pilot, it's there. But you can also alpha it out in the bitmaps and use the dp to put in any pilot bgl if you want a better looking figure. That will come in handy for adding British pilots to FAA Hellcats too.

LOL You must have been editing while I was typing my post. I just noticed one last thing. There should be a pitot under the right wing tip.

Regarding a cut out to view backwards. Yes there was but it wasn't very big. Makes you wonder why they bothered. But then, it's the armor plate that covers it up, so maybe the armor was more of an afterthought.

Yes I keep forgeting the pitot under. It got deleted as I used the left wing for both wings whne I started the model.

Was thing the there was cut outs but armor plate would over them up too. Was making sure. This is prob why the rear windows where drop. They don't do any good if you can't see out of them because of the armor plate!

Here we go!

New test version and it is now a early F6F-5 with side windows. Every thing about the model is the same but with out the bugs! Just a new folder name and in game title.

Hi Allen,

The model looks good. All the animations are working now.

I see you copied the M$oft antenna wires from the stock, but they are completely wrong. I know you must be tired of fussing with the model by now but I'd recommend either replacing them with a single wire arranged like the attached illustration or just removing them altogether if you don't want to fight it any further.

BTW what looks like a partial wire sticking up from the fuselage spine was a whip antenna.

My two cents...

...of contribution.

I will also make Curtiss Electric prop textures. Grumman mounted both Hamilton Strd. and Curtiss props on their Hellcats.

Let me double Captain Kurt's and UncleTgt's comments: the new overhaul looks real good and flies very well too.

Enjoy!

Okay then I will get it uploaded.

I'm including the prop texture Kelticheart as a option in the texture folder.

Hey....WOW!!!! :triumphant:

I didn't realize this babe was gonna be a "dash 5" Hellcat! :encouragement: :applause:

Monster firepower with 2 x 20 mm cannons and 4 x .50" Brownings, she must have chewed up lighweight Japanese fighters with just a couple of squirts!

I don't remember whether the two cannons were the inner or the outer pair.

Curtiss Electric propeller textures are also ready. I am attaching them here but, if anyone's interested, I can make an addon pack over the weekend, comprising GG-style exhaust effects and alternative payloads made with Dbolt's US weapons.

Thank you, Allen!

P.S.: I have a question. Morton made few years ago some beautiful
late-war skins for the OH model by The B24Guy. I'd love using Morton's master repaints, did the texture mapping change in this model?
Thank you.
