I'd met Scott a few times.........excellent instructor with 30 yrs experience.........
Bobby was new to aviation, Harley rider, construction contractor.......
bought himself the Yankee to learn to fly. My brother had rented a corner of his hanger to Bobby and had performed
an annual just last week. The plane was in excellent shape.
They had been shooting touch & go's all morning and just disappeared. No-one saw or heard anything.....no fire/smoke.
Current theory is departure stall (turning on to downwind ?? ). We'll probably never know.

Right down the road and one of the aircraft I was looking purchasing until I looked at one in person in Burnet. Hard to get 2 grown men in one with the current TX heat. Sad to hear.
 
Very sad to hear. I had some time in a 1971 AA-1. With the AA-1's stubby little wings, it thinks it is a high performance plane. It would do 120kts at sea level..not bad for a O-320 powered craft. When I flew the AA-1, I treated it like a high performance plane...especially around the pattern.
 
I used to be an A&P at an FBO that specialised in caring for AA-1 and AA-5 series aircraft. The rather convoluted history of the types' production can make the model designations a little confusing. If the aircraft in this incident was in fact a true AA-1 Yankee then it would make a rather poor choice for a trainer owing to rather bad stall characteristics and a somewhat high approach speed due to it's symetrical airfoil. When Grumman bought out American Aviation they dropped the Yankee in favor of the AA-1B design which had a more convensional airfoil.

from the moment i first flew the one piglet made, it's been my favorite freeware even today.

Fair amount of time in the AA5B. Nice flying aircraft. Probably my favorite low wing GA a/c. I had Piglet's AA5 but finally deleted it because the panel looked so crude.

His panel skills obviously improved with the later excellent a/c such as his PC-7 (my default flyer) and his PC-6 and Bronco.
