Gw3

I have heard a lot about GW3 but have not installed it. My install of FS9 is dedicated to mainly pre-50s aircraft, mostly radial, mostly non-military, with some military planes thrown in the mix...can't live without some military fliers to patrol the skies with.

What exactly does GW3 do for FS9. I know it rolls back some of the airports to earlier times, but what else does it do? Does it improve the ground texture for the low and slow flying done in early aircraft.....the trees and houses look great, but the grass looks like crap down low.

i use gw3 and sw
goes back to 30's and 50's
as far as the grass i use well i dont have it on this pc
but ill let you know

It changes a lot. GW3 gives most areas an older look. Works thru textures primarily. Silver wings gives most textures a 50's look, along with the ai. Cal Classics ai and scenery is made for this one, and vice-versa. I fly more in it than any other. I use three separate loads to keep them separated. Follow the instructions, and everything works great.

GW3 is mostly different textures, removes the moderness of FS9. It is a second install of FS9, so you can keep both for flying in different times. Really makes you feel like your back in time. Many of the major airports are gone completly, only open fields. No lighted, concrete runways/taxiways. For the grass, I use a photoreal grass texture set that works well with GW3.

OBIO, you have to read the Golden Wing 3 installation instructions very carefully. Golden Wings 3 is a completely separate install of FS9 with its own special land, sky, and water textures. It is made to represent the 30s with less landclass, paved taxiways removed. Anu add-ons you use for FS9 like the FSGenesis meshes, may be used for GW3 also. Even the Fly-By and F1View modules. But do not try and install the FSRecorder module into each, it will bum things up.
So it really has nothing to do with FS9 itself, it is its own platform after all is installed. You can then installed aircraft to GW3 the same as you would FS9. It has its own cfg and all.

Silver Wings is much like VOZ and you install it to FS9 and use its textures when you wish and then go back to whatever you were using.

GW3 is made for flying down low:

Click the embedded video and go to it at YT and click high quality. May give it to you right off, filmed in WIDE-Screen with 5.1 stereo sound for the jams. :d

Both GW and SW are excellent addons. My suggestion would be to peg where in time most of your sim flying happens. If it's the 40's and before, then GW3 is definitely for you. The one thing to keep in mind is that GW3 is a commitment - it's very hard to revert back to a stock FS install. Silver Wings, on the other hand, can be reversed very easily, if you've made a backup of all textures and scenery folders.

I installed it out of curiosity, and found it to be excellent, but most of my flying is with 50's-70's era planes, and as such, Silver Wings is more appropriate. My two FS installs are both Silver Wings installs - one is a "FS1958" and the other "FS1970". I have all of the Calclassic and E60s (early sixties) project airports, and it's truly awesome. I personally added the Indigo water textures but kept the Silverwings OceanHeightsField. I used the GW3 GA planes as substitutes for the FS9 GA planes - no Cessnas, Pipers, etc. any more. I'm very happy - I'll add a few screenies later.

Cheers!

I have Fs9 installed to my main HD. ? Can I do another install of Fs9 to my #3 hd for SW or GW?

Yes...You can put GW or Silver wings on any drive...

You are basically making a FS9 clone fron your install, placing it wherever you want it ,then deleting things like out of era aircraft..

Its funny, when you start the default flight at KSEA,you are actually in a neighborhood...KSEA is not there anymore.....LOL

Any problems, we still have a Golden Wings forum over at The Old Hangar. Just click the TOH Banner below.

Yes indeed.
But, and it's no biggie, you need to do some 'renaming'.
In case, my standard FS9 installation is optimised for VOZ and for certain reasons remains 'FS9'.
GW3 goes best into a lean and clean FS9 installation, it then is renamed 'GW3'.
My present installations are 'FS9' for VOZ, 'FS9 International', 'FS Silver Wings' and 'FSGW3'.
The only irritation comes when certain additions require 'FS9' ........ :173go1:
Below are typical GW3 shots.

Golden Wings is to FS2004 as Over Flanders Fields is to CFS3, a complete parallel installation. There's a review of it here. It replaces scenery, texture files, ai, the lot.

If the idea of a complete new install puts you off, you can get a very good taster with Golden Hawaii, which is an addon for an existing FS2004 setup and lets you switch between modern and golden age just for that area. It includes ai traffic and a very nice Sikorsky S-43. If I were you I'd go for this, and if you like it move on to Golden Wings.
:wavey:

The new install is very easy...Just name your FS9 install to FS9.bak or anything...Then make a new folder on any drive you want..... Then install FS9 again ,browsed to your new FS9 folder.....Once done rename your original FS9 back to FS9 (not FS9.bak)

From there just follow the included GW3 install notes...Its actually quite easy to do......

I have my test FS9 done that way too...See....LOL

Shortcut #2 goes to my D/ Drive where my test FS9 sits.....

I think once I get my new 250gig SATA drive installed as my sim drive (the drive came with no cables..just need to get to the other side of the county to pick some up)...I will do a GW or SW install. Most of the planes in my collection will be from the 20s through the 50s...most will be radial engined.

Most of my flying is down low....2500 to 5000 feet...so I am basically just looking for some ground textures that look good from that altitude. The trees are fine, the buildings are fine...the grass looks like a giant herd of cows has been through the sim munching away.

For those with GW and SW installs....are there any airports left in Mansfield Ohio...that's my home town and would like to be able to fly from home. If not, I suppose I will have to learn to create scenery just enough to make my own little airport.

OBIO

I can make you an airport of your home town...

I can only do it with all the EZ Scenerie libraries, not model my own stuff...

But let me know....

GW or SW both use the same ground textures, but for the era you're flying in, I'd recommend GW rather than SW.

SW just changes the environmental textures without changing everything else. Your FS world will still look like 2004, except nicer.

GW3 will make your FS world look more like around 1945, which isn't too far off for flying Golden Age planes or Nifty Fifty planes.

GW's AI traffic is pegged at around the mid- to late 1930s, but the physical world doesn't reach that far back. Bill and Lynn removed or reworked a few of the biggest and most modern airports, but to do the whole world would've been an impossible task. So they put out a basic GW3 and left it to us to do additional work and push the world further back in time if we want to. That means that all the smaller airports remain in GW just because it would've been too much trouble to remove them. It's up to you to get rid of the ones in your local area that you know weren't there is GW times, and to create old ones that were there then but are gone now and absent from FS.

Straight from the box, GW3 still has all the airports built in the 1940-41 Air Corps construction boom, which is why I say it makes the FS world look like the mid-1940s. From the mid-1940s to the mid-1950s there wasn't a lot of radical change. All the WW2 air bases, and the fact that many of them were turned over to civilian use, meant that there wasn't a need to build a lot of big, new airports in the immediate post-war years. So, based on what you like in aircraft, I think your FS world would suit you better if you build it on a GW3 chassis rather than SW. I think you'd find that a SW installation still looks too modern for your taste.

Of course, you can have both if you want to. GW3 was designed with the expectation that you'd have dual FS installations.

Another factor to consider is AI. A SW installation will still fill your world with the same planes as a stock FS9: jetliners and business turboprops, planes that would look just as much out of place in a 1950s era sim as a pre-WW2 one. GW3's AI will fill your world with mid-30s planes, many of which were still around in the 1950s and wouldn't look out of place in that era.

Of course, you can do a lot to customize your AI scheme. I stuck with the GW AI for my pre-WW2 sim, and for my post-WW2 sim I started with CalClassic's 1959 airline scheme, then pushed it back a few years by replacing the turboprops with earlier propliners. I made my own military AI scheme, but that's another story...

Hello Wombat,

Those are gorgeous shots - any other addons other than GW3 to make the scenery look that good? Well done!

A question for the gang - apart from the GW3 AI, are there other "global" AI packages, to give a decent 1930's business to the larger airports? Thinking about a third FS install ... maybe an FS1938 is in order....

Where can we download GW3?

Hey Guys,

sorry for the noobie question, but Where can we download GW3?

Cheers,

G'Day DL.
Been a while!!
My GW3 installation received a little extra eye candy with the addition of Koorby Clouds out of my VOZ install, FEX clouds and Samoshim Trees, plus a package of weather themes that I found at one of the online sites but I can't remember which one!
CRAFT Syndrome once again.
I've tweaked GW3 along the lines of VOZ for a little extra snap as well.
Constant tinkering .........much fun!
