.....so, last winter this guy buys a beautiful 1949 Stinson to learn how to fly in. 8 months later (?) his instructor feels he is ready to solo. They fly to a nearby airport and after several touch & gos, the instructor gets out.

The student's first landing is really bad......stalls it in from about 10 feet. The second landing is a little better but not much.
On the third and last landing the student has calmed down and appears to "grease" the plane in BUT the left wheel is frozen/jammed (probably from the first two landings). It leaves a "skid-mark" for about 100 yds on the grass strip before breaking off. The landing gear strut digs into the ground and.........

No serious injury....just bumps and bruises.
 
We recently had similar happen at my airport.
A FAA guy was checking out a pilot in a Maule taildragger. The pilot passed his check ride, then the FAA guys asks if he can fly the Maule.
Flight went well until the FAA guy ground looped it upon landing, ripping off the left gear, wingtip, prop strike, etc.
The latest issue of Fly Low magazine has the report from this incident.

Oh that is, in a way, funny. Too bad for any FAA examiner flying in the future. In the government;s wonderful method of insuring this never happens again, NO FAA flight examiner will ever be allowed to fly a check ride aircraft again.
 
Man... That makes me sick to see that beautiful classic on its back like that. I hope they get it restored and back to flying condition.

Thats horrible to hear John. You would think that with America being the world leader in General Aviation, that we would be most realistic in such matters. Thats like a driving instructor never getting in an accident. Perfection doesnt exist in humans.. Perfect scenarios dont exist either except on paper....
