Having a problem with vista

I am trying to edit some CFS2 files on my new machine but MS Wordpad won`t let me save the changes ,any ideas.
 
BOB mariereid is right about turning off your user account control. I have vista and I can report that vista will note even let you load scenery with the user account control on.
 
Turning UAC off will solve it, or if your like me and don't mind UAC you can take control of the files by right clicking on the file, click on Properties, then Security tab, click on Edit, (a new window will open) then high light "Users (your name-PC\Users)", then down in "Permissions for Authenticated Users" put a check in the "Allow" box, click "Apply", OK, then close it out. Now you will be able to edit the files and keep UAC turned on. This works for both Vista and Windows 7.

A little tip for you, if you install any game outside of C/:program Files folder you will not have to worry about UAC. For X64 bit users all 32 bit games and apps will install by default into Program Files(x86) folder.

Yup, it's that Vista User account control. Turn it off via the control panel, and this problem will end.
 
Once in a while I have had problems like this even though UAC is turned off. The problem must be with the permissions but I cannot always straighten it out. What I end up doing is cutting and pasting the whole text file into a new one on the desktop. Then, I delete the old one (or drag it out of the install) and drag the new file into the install. We should have the problem covered one way or another.
 
Thanks fellows, I turned off the UAC and I was able to do more but I am still having some problems openning up some bit maps and installing some programs. It is calling for a command line and there I am lost.I may end up having to do all my scenery on this pc and then transfer it to that pc.Any suggestions.

I have it on one of my two computers, and CFS2 loads just fine; although I do not have CFS2 installed in the default location.

Are you running your account as an administrator?
 
I am like erufle, my UAC is turned off in Vista. I always go to XP to work on my files in CFS2.

I STRONGLY recommend partitioning your HD or having 2 separate and distinct HDs. One with XP and one with either Vista or Windows 7. Windows 7 is even worse for modifying files than Vista.
 
I have turned off my UAC and firewall but that hasn`t helped my frame rates much. It seems that the CFS2 clouds eat up alot of them.Any ideas where I might pick up some friendly frame rate clouds?I am running everything wide open.I do need a larger processer but other than that what else do I need to do.Fellows you have all been very helpfull and I thank you but don`t go anywhere i am going to need even more help.I am runninga rebuilt Gateway.This is what I have,a 280 gig hard drive with Intel 2140 @1.60GHz processer,a generic 20inch screen, ATI Radeon 4300/4500 vid card with 2 GiGs of ram and an ATI High definition sound card using a Logitech Extreme D Pro.Also, do I need to use the Auto processing for Vista Home Premium ?
 
You most likely know this but, I have cfs2 set to maximize in the properties "run" box, this seems to work best for me. In the info bar where you select "tactical display", etc., I have "full screen" unchecked. My machine for cfs2 is off line. My start up items are, HD Audio, and 2 items that say Nvidia, that's it. Sorry for the low tech wording. I think my machine is much more powerful than yours. I just installed one of the IRIS P-40s. If I look at it sitting on the runway, my fps drop to 18-19. (I must say it is a pretty sight!) I have my resolution set at 1920x1200x32. When struggling for frames I have set it to 1680x1050x32 and I did get better fps. I Know you have much more knowledge than me, when it comes to computers, you will get it all geared up. I thought vista was a curse, now I believe it's as good as anything else. bob your computer specs are on the very low end for using vista. I have a E8500 , 6mb of ram and a evga 9800gt for my system. cfs2 using the lod7 and lod8 makes my system even stumble when flying the defense of japan missions v2 along with the new B-29.
 
That's not a bad cpu, it is a C2D. Where it lacks is in the cache department (1M Cache Shared) other than that its the same as my e6750. You can overclock it if the motherboard supports OC'ing. I think where you frames are suffering is the vid card (could be the drivers), ATI are known for not having the best drivers out there. I don't know what CAT version your running, but maybe using an older version will help. I'd like to know what type mobo and memory you have, you can download a little app called "CPU-Z" and it will give you all the info on your cpu, motherboard and memory. I did the download you suggested but have at this time no way to get it from one pc to the other for testing.
 
I also use a little free application called "Vista Services Optimizer." You can search for it on the web or PM me if you want to try it. What it does is turn off non-essential processes based upon your answers to a few simple questions. Then, Vista runs a little better. But the real advantage comes when you get ready to start up CFS2. You press a button called Game Mode and it turns off even more services. But, you have to remember to turn Game Mode off when you finish with CFS2 or things can run a little screwy. Anyway, it works for me with no problems, but then I really don't have too many problems to begin with.
