HBO - Pacific

jmig

SOH-CM-2025
I saw a commercial where this series is being released on DVD. Anyone seen it? Is it as good as Band of Brothers?

A 10-part mini-series from the creators of "Band of Brothers" telling the intertwined stories of three Marines during America's battle with the Japanese in the Pacific during World War II.

There were a few lengthy threads on here when it was first broadcast on HBO. I seem to remember the general consensus was that it wasn't very good, especially in comparison with BoB.

I know a few of the guys commented on it, but I can't really recall if it was negative or positive?
Regardless, I will still buy the "Pacific" series.
Thanks for the head's up John!

I found it the equivalent of a grade "B" movie......could not connect with the actors in this, absolutely NO outstanding characters!! FLAT!!Cartoon like!! This does not take away from the history, but it did not come near to the "Band Of Brothers"...No disrespect to the Marines...nothing to do with that...Their story is in blood on their enemy's chest..They need no pat on the head from anyone!!..This had a not so veiled modern "POINT" of view.....Hey after 60 yrs or so?..People not born yet writing the script?? I felt the absence of historian and biographer Stephen Ambrose, who made a huge differance,in "Band Of Brothers" a glaring ommision!!!!... Only My O-PEON!!

beana51~ Thank you for sharing your point of view. I appreciate it!

You can have the best film director in the industry, but if the actors can't adequately convey the emotions, or can't relate to the actual storyline, it will impair the movie/series

The Pacific < Band Of Brothers < Generation Kill

BoB's Battle Of The Bulge episode haunts me to this day.

The book was pretty good, if a little dry at times. The mini-series....not so much. Very wooden acting, and the script was nowhere as good as the book...

yea i didnt like it either .. it would have been better if they'd followed a company rather than just 3 people. It just felt so disjointed .. one min you where in a middle of a battle, next min you where back in the states watching someone chatting up girls ... left you wondering if it was ment to be telling the story of the pacific war or be a romcom set in ww2 ... I wouldnt recomend it to anyone ...

I religiously sat in front of my television every sunday for 10 weeks in anticipation of this program and must say that I was disappointed in the overall results of what I saw.

The point to remember here is that Pacific is nothing like BoB in the sense that you're following a specific unit (regardless of characters,) as you are in BoB. In the Pacific, its a story of two or three individuals and their time in the service.

So instead of seeing one unit's history ala BoB ... you see some of the unit's history, but for the most part you follow particular characters into action and then on leave.

You don't get the overall sense of what the First Marine Division did in the Pacific ... there are only a few highlights of unit action the rest if kinda mundane ...

Hope you don't mind a little sex action in your military action ...

I don't own BoB on DVD, but having seen portions and segments of BoB, if I were given a choice between BoB and Pacific for private viewing on DVD ... I'd go with BoB first.

I agree with the general consensus. Band of Brothers was so incredible in all aspects, especially acting.

Pacific is.....well,.....yawn.

Last night, I read a lot of the reviews on Amazon.com- the buyers on Amazon rated "Pacific" 4 stars out of 5.
I also understand that most of you guys, having a military background, would be sharper critics.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.

I read the book while recently deployed. I should receive my DVD set this week sometime. Now I'll just have to find time to watch it.

Band of Brothers set a very high standard, so perhaps some degredation in the overal presentation of "The Pacific" is to be expcted. We'll soon see.

I did note that it's release price was just shy of $50.00 at Amazon.com while the release price of BoB was close to $100.00. I hope that isn't a clue of some kind.

I agree with everyone else's views on this , The production values appear to be of the same high standard but there is no comparison of the qualities of the stories. BoB is the story of a single unit primarily from a single source, shared with us in a linear fashion. The Pacific was crafted from three different sources and doesn't proceed in a linear fashion and lacks the cohesiveness of BoB and never really lets us get as emotionally invested in the characters. my two cents

I hope that having read the campanion book "The Pacific" as well as "Islands of the Damned" by one of the NCOs in the book (SGT Burgin) will help give me some insight and lend some continuity to the DVD presentation.

Having read "A Bridge Too Far" prior to seeing the movie made the movie much more enjoyable as I understood the time line and key events better. Unfortunately that is not always the case after Hollywood directors and producers get a hold of a story or book and convert it into a movie. To witt: Pearl Harbor. The Japanese sneak attack on an American "menage a troi."

I pretty much agree with what everyone has stated above on "HBO-The Pacific." Even though I don't have HBO, I've seen parts of the series.....pretty ho-hum for the most part. It could have been done so much better. I'd strongly suggest before buying the DVD set (Cloud9Gal) that you'd take it out from your local library first. Any well stocked library does or will carry the set. Maybe not right away,...but they will eventually carry it. Then,...after viewing the series and liking it,....buy it.

The series is available on Netflix. Five DVD's for the episodes and a 6th DVD with bonus material.
