I have been having a major problem with CFS3 crashing to desktop and the computer then restarting. I have deleted and installed it twice but it still happens. The strange thing is that even after reinstalling CFS3 as soon as I start it I get a message that CFS3 wasn't shut down properly the last time. One message said that the NV4_disp driver has stopped. I then installed the latest Nvidia driver. Another message said The configuration file is out of date please rerun CFS3. Am I going to have to reformat my machine.
I run CCcleaner and Advanced System Care which continouslly cleans out the registry ,Spyware etc. Could this be the problem ? I'm at my wits end.

What you need to do is go to C:\Documents and Settings\(your computer name)\Application Data\Microsoft .and delete your cfs3 files. If you can not find Application Data\Microsoft open a folder you made then click on tools then folder options then views click show hidden files and folders. when you restart cfs3 it will make a new folder in its place.
Hope this helps

In addition you need to set up the configuration file by opening windows explorer and go to the cfs3 main directory and open cfs3config.exe. Set your screen resolution and other settings to settings that your computer can maintain.

You should increase your virtual memory to abut double your installed ram.

Turn off background programs such as anti-virus programs.

You guys are fantastic. I've been fighting with the install for some time and in one fell swoop both of you give me the solution. I followed both of your suggestions , removed the CFS3 folder from my documents and set up the screen and sim resolutions to match and everything is beautiful. Didn't have to increase virtual memory since I have 2GB of ram, besides I have no idea how to change virtual memory. I am building a new computer with 8GB of ram and everything right up to date, now I won't have the same problem. :applause:

Thank you both,

What an excellent thread! :) glad you're sorted Silver Wings. Now you're up and running please try the ETO expansion, it's a must!

You will need to use a x64 version of Windows OS for that new PC as the x32 versions are limited to 3.25gb of memory. You will need to check that any peripherals like printers have x64 drivers available.

I already bought 8GB of the PC8500 DDR2 1066 memory chips, Win XP x64, Corsair 850W power supply,GeForce 9800 GTX+512MB video card, AMD Athlon x2 6400+ socket AM2 and an Asus Mobo. I'm just waiting for a CPU cooler fan because they sent me the wrong one. Never thought about the printer, I guess I better check, I doubt if the HP 5500 or the HP 1310 series all in one on my other machine will do it, Oh well, it sure got out of hand.
Can I download any 64 drivers for any of the printers I have, or do I have to buy a new printer ?

Thanks,

Silver wings

Where did you find the Athlon 6400+? I've been looking for one, but they seem to be gone.

Help clarify CFS3 Vista crashing workaround, please

I've been running CFS3 on my AMD 64 Dual Core 6000+ w/ Vista Home Premium, on a new Sapphire HD 3870 512 meg card, w/ 3 Megs of RAM. I've used CFS3 Config to set the game at about 80% of top graphics, with 1280 x 960 as the screen res. Have also updated the Sapphire drivers to the latest, but am probably running a late 2007/early 2008 version of Vista. Nothing running in the background though -- no virus programs or anything (stand-alone gaming computer only, not even connected to the internet).

The game looks beautiful and runs smooth, but I get the "CFS 3 has stopped working" crash and blah/blah/blah after a few minutes of game play, usually in the midst of switching from gun to gun stations on a bomber, or in the midst of blazing away at the bad guys.

When you say I should "delete my CFS3 files" in the Application Data folder, is that it? How many CFS3 files are there? Are they the only files there? After I delete them, then I just restart the game, and the disk will re-copy or re-establish the necessary data somewhere else, and thereby fix the recurring crash problem?

Also, how/where do I increase the virtual memory to 6 meg?

This game, which I found a brand-new copy of on the shelf at Microcenter for $10, and my new AMD/Sapphire system, have rekindled my love affair with flight sims, but the Vista crash issue here is a real beyotch. Any further help greatly appreciated! :kilroy:

Colin Skinner

I had NV4_DISP problems. I followed both sets of advice and it is now working brilliantly. Thank you:ernae:

Hi Pat Pattle,

Where can I find the ETO expansion pack. I clicked on the icon you posted but couldn't get anywhere.

Thank you,

Hi Baywing,
Perhaps I goofed in calling the computer an Athlon 6400. I got it from Tiger direct a couple of weeks ago as a bare bones kit which I upgraded. It was the Asus M3N78 dual core processor- Athlon X2 6000+. The processor is the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.0Ghz. I think I'm confused so forgive me.

Hi RobHogue,
With the fix suggested by Flyer01 and rbp71854 above it worked for me.

This suggestion on deleting ALL the files in the application data folder only applies when doing a complete reinstall of CFS3. There may be time to time when it might be necessary to delete the uisel.xml in the data application folder when one is experiencing continueous CTDs.

You ctd during sim play may be caused by low virtual memory or other programs running in the background competing for resources. To increase virtual memory click to go to control panel>system>advanced system settings>advanced>performance>settings>advanced and you will see the category change the virtual memory.

Hope that helps

No problem. I was looking at the 6400+ X2 for an upgrade. A few places had stock late last week, but they are all gone now. I snoozed, so I loozed.

Hi Baywing,

I just checked Tigerdirect they have several there. Just query Athlon 6400+ once you're in.
